Default Help with audio questions

Hi!

Got no one in my circuit of friends that can help me with my issues, so I'm trying my luck here.

I lately acquired a new receiver after my old one met with an accident at a party. I bought a Denon AVR-1910. From before I got some old Infinity speakers (2 front, 2 rear and one center). Got relatively new Sony BD player (updated).

Now, I am hopeless when it comes to manuals (which I also managed to misplace) and know next to nothing about how to setup the best audio option with what I have. I only watch Blu-Ray and occasionally listen to music, never tv and dvd.

Problem: The audio sound quality/volume differs extremely from movie to movie. Example; Twilight and Slumdog Millionaire BR have high volume and sounds great. V for Vendetta, 2001: A Space Odyssey and MANY more have extremely low sound. I've tried all the DEFAULT sound options and the one that sounds best is -always- 7ch Stereo DVD, whatever that is.

I usually watch a movie on about -20db, as I get concerned if I push it higher (even if the sound is too low) as I managed to destroy the first receiver I got trying to attack the problem myself. The hand control was a little sensitive so when I accidentally pushed it to -7db or something, it went dead. Got a new one, but I don't want it to happen again. Don't know what happened in the first place.

Any suggestions about what I should do? Can a newbie such as me manage to fix this without to much effort (I don't like experimenting with things I don't know anything about). I do appreciate great sound to go with the near 300 BR I have acquired in the last 18 months.

Took some pictures of the setup and cables etc;

you definitely do not want to use 7ch Stereo! Your receiver should display Dolby TrueHD and Dts-HD MA.

7 channel stereo basically takes a 2 channel sound and outputs over all speakers. Basically left and right...you will be missing most of the audio!

...I would love to get into detail, but I have a splitting headache so keeping short...set Bluray player HDMI audio to Direct. (why do you have a coaxial cable connected to the bluray player?...remove it, you dont need it)

download the user manual:

Denon 1910

...Denon makes a pretty confusing manual so if you get stuck just ask.

oh and zone two is for using speakers in a different room (zone). Probably not something you should concern yourself with. Leave this option off.

Default Thanx

Thank you guys. Will take a look at the setup as soon as I get time.

However, right now I have only one HDMI cable, which goes from my sony bd player to my tv. The only cable from the denon receiver to the bd player is that coaxial cable. So how can I remove it? I'm guessing I need another HDMI cable?

yeah, you'll need another HDMI cable.

3ft HDMI cable

6ft HDMI cable

8ft HDMI cable

10ft HDMI cable

...they have other lengths and colors.

Buy your friend some too!

Sorry for interrupting you thread but really need this question answered...

When i am watching my blu rays on my ps3 the audio is off by a little bit

For example you hear the audio but then you see their lips moving a little after it is very frustrating....Is this problem caused by my HDMI cable TV speakers or is it my ps3

When this happens I go to the display and just reset my setting and it is fixed for the movie but I almost have to do that whenever I want to watch a movie I would really like any suggestions to fix this annoying problem

Thank you

Are you running your PS3 directly to the TV or through an AV receiver?

What does that mean I have a HDMI cable from my ps3 straight to the back of my tv... so hopfully that answers you question

It does answer my question. I was asking if you had your PS3 connected to the TV directly (which you do) or if it was connected to an AV receiver which is then connected to the TV. The reason I was asking is because in a receiver's menu there is usually a 'lip-sync' setting that can be adjusted to correct the issue you're having. Unfortunately I'm not sure if there is such a setting in the PS3 or in your particular TV.

Ok, so I got another hdmi cable. Sound improved at once!
However, I just saw that I have only 1 hdmi entrance in my blu-ray. How can I get both the picture and sound in hd through my receiver? Right now, I have sound but no picture.

Default DVD with Blu Ray player + sound

Question....Should I get better quality of sound when playing DVD;s with my Blu player?
Are there any audio settings that I should have on blu player when playing a DVD compared to a BLU disc, i.e. bitstream, etc

Blu player connected to my reciever via Digital Optical cable.
Is there a benefit going HDMI-->Reciever-->and then a HDMI to TV?

Thanks for the help.
