Hi, Rob

Follow these instructions and let me know if it works..

1. Download the firmware update from Panasonic's website here.

2. Burn the file to a blank CD-R and insert the CD-R into the player.

You should be good to go...alternatively, if your friend has an internet connection, they can simply plug an ethernet cable into the player and download any firmware updates automatically. If you need assistance with any of this, look through the user guide: http://service.us.panasonic.com/OPERMANPDF/SCBT200.PDF

Page 32 details updating Firmware. Hope this helps!

If you've tried burning the file to the disc and tried downloading firmware through an internet connection via the ethernet port and movies still do not play, I would recommend calling Panasonic for assistance....another member may be able to chime in about this but I'm not really sure where to go from here...what are some of the movies that aren't working?

Does your friend have an internet connection? Is he able to plug an ethernet cable into the receiver? That should allow him to download all necessary updates If not, I'm not sure what else to tell you, I would recommend calling Panasonic.

if the firmware download is an .iso file, just burning it to disc will not work, you will need to burn as an image. (a bit different)

use a free program called Imgburn
  • open Imgburn, use "Write image file to disc" option
  • select location of the firmware download .iso
  • insert blank cd-r into disc drive
  • set burn speed 2.4x

burn away!

I knew someone smarter than me would come in here

I've never had to burn firmware to a CD so I'm not sure at all of the process. An fyi, crackin, the file to download has a .FRM extension

for some odd reason the firmware link doesnt open for me, so I had to assume its a .iso file.

...Imgburn can burn just about anything, Im sure it will work in this case...but I'll take a deeper look into it.

Hey Rob!

As I said VIA PM, the .frm file extension is a standard data file burn that can be done with just about any program. The instructions on the website explain how to do it within Windows (no program required), follow those steps and you should be set.

well the very little I could find on this issue was here:

http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=10714

...but using Imgburn, go into:

Mode = Build
drag and drop .frm file into the big open box
go into the 'options' tab and set 'File System' = 'ISO9660'
select slow burn speed

...if that doesnt work, try same settings but this time change 'Data Type' = 'Mode2/FORM1/2352'

see if that does the trick.

Could I guess....

All of those OS's have the option to right click the file and send to disk though. That is very universal, and supported by all of those OS's and outlined in those instructions.

...but the firmware is specific in using ISO9660, no Joliet or UDF

I believe Vista would use UDF format by default? etc (I could be wrong)

...Jason, I would like to say you can change the options via the Windows choice, but honestly never go that route so I dunno?
