Default Rear question

i have upgraded my fronts to monitor 60 polks and cs1. i do not plan on upgrading my rear speakers anytime soon. should my onkyo front left and right speakers be fine as rears? plus i wanted to downconvert to 5.1 to drive more power to my monitor 60s. is it worth it with the onkyo 605 or will i not notice much of a difference?

thanks for any help

As far as the Onkyo speakers, just make sure they are rated as 8 ohms. If it is below that, like 6 or 4 ohms, then the 605 may have some issues driving them. Which leads me to your next question, the 605 is not very powerful, but should be OK to power your set-up. That being the case, with the limited power, I would go with 5.1. Any add'l wattage you can save can only help, but you may not really notice much of a difference either since the 605 doesn't throw a lot of power to begin with. Your rears are not really set-up ideally, even when you lay down. I think you may gain better benefits going to a more properly placed 5.1 set-up and saving the add'l wattage from the 605 with 5 speakers versus using all 7 as they are located now. Again, just check the impedance of those Onkyo speakers. If they are rated as 8 ohms, you are fine. If not, be careful at high volumes, you may start to notice some clipping.....and you might not, it is tough to say.

Good luck!

i'm not sure what you mean when you say down convert to 5.1? if you have a 7.1 system, simply use 5.1 audio movies or music, there is no need to down convert anything. as the other poster mentioned ensure that your new speakers are 8 ohm instead of 6 or 4. this will ensure your absolute compatability with your existing receiver and mitigate any excessive heating issues.
also, check your receiver specs to see if the power ratings increase as you decrease the amount of channels being powered and by how much.

best of luck to ya and keep us posted.
