How likely would it be for Cannibal Holocaust, Cannibal Ferox, and some of the old Italian cannibal horror flicks to come to Blu-Ray? I emailed the folks at Grindhouse releasing and I have yet to get a reply.

I think each of these films could look pretty solid with a Blu-ray release. And I am sure that once the market fully shows that a company like Grindhouse can get into it without losing their heads in the process, these films will get released. It would make no sense for a company like Grindhouse to go to the measures that they did to get a film like Holocaust released in the first places not to get it released in the medium that may become the true standard for the industry (For at least a small piece of time). Now, more to the point of the animal scenes. Well, I don't support them and I am not a fan of Deodato because of some of his choices while making Holocause, which I could get into, but since this is a Blu-ray forum I'll stay away from my full feelings. But just to say something, when your screen name is "jvoorhees", I am guessing that you are into films that depict all sorts of fake murders, rapes and deaths. Yes, there are a few death scenes that depict real animal death. But to be honest, there are other films that depict the same thing. Infact, just turn on the news every night, there are far worse out there than what is in this film. Or go to Liveleak.com or do a web search, you can find stuff that would make Holocaust a trip to the ice cream store if you wanted to (In a matter of minutes). I wouldn't be too worried about what this film has to offer. If you are really worried about this film, I probably wouldn't watch too many horror films to begin with. We're talking about what, a near thirty year old movie, that is legal to watch. It doesn't make it right, but I don't think that anyone is going to be affected for life from this. ANd if one is, I have to question them as a person. In the end, it sucks to see the choices that Deodato made to enhance his film (In his mind). But honestly, it's the film that goes "All the way". Everyone that knows about this films, knows about the choices that were made in creating this. And if one doesn't, then they have been under a rock or are under twelve years old. Watch the film though. Some absolutely love this, and some hate it (Which i guess is obvious and can go with anything). But if you're running around with a horror themed name, you should probably see this film once just because of the stature of where it stands the overall scheme of horror films. I thought the movie was kind of laughable and kind of amateurish, that had a couple of good fx scenes to justify may wasted hour and some minutes of viewing. And I also felt that if the animal scenes were not added, this film would not have gained the stature of controversy that it has today (Which would make sense as to why Deodato shot them and kept them in through editing to final cut). See it and judge for yourself. But in the end, don't make it more than what it is. Ultimately, fake or not, Deodato shows remorse for his actions and films like this have helped these sorts of things not happen today (Though not the reasons to originally film the scenes). See it. Laugh, cry, feel what ever emotion this little film will bring about from you and go with it. |

I'm sure that they (Grindhouse) will release them eventually, even if they have to sublet them like they did with I DRINK YOUR BLOOD (to Fangoria). I'm more jacked for PIECES finally coming out in October (albeit on standard DVD). Now there's a Blu worth buying! The most wanted Italian releases would probably be SUSPIRIA, OPERA, THE BEYOND, ZOMBIE, and TORSO and I would expect to see them before the cannibal flicks simply because too many people are intimidated to purchase these classics as a blind buy.

I'm sure it's just a matter of time before you can watch all the animal killings, rapes, penis chopping, gut munching, and of course the legendary abortion scene, all in glorious HD!
But will it include the complete 'The Last Road to Hell' sequence? Grindhouse will probably announce it coming soon and then wait 3 years to release it! You know, I just don't understand these Cannibals and Zombies. I mean, if I wanted to eat some human flesh, I would go for an arm or a leg, something with meat on (and I would cook it first). But in these films they always go straight for the giblets don't they? |

Looking at Caligula, for example, the film was shot on crap film stock with a DP who seemingly did not care much for proper lighting, and the BD revealed not much above SD other than a bit more detail to the grain. Off the top of my head, I believe pretty much all of Argento's classic works were shot with a half-height widescreen process that severely reduces image resolution. I'm sure Suspiria, for instance, will see significant improvement over the SD release, but the grain that Anchor Bay tried to smooth out of their transfer is definitely going to be there, and it's hard to say just how much more detail the negative has to show. Grindhouse's Cannibal Holocaust release was cleaner, with far superior color to previous releases, and they did a wonderful job overall, but I really don't know how much more detail they'd be able to extract out of the film's soft focus 16mm images for a Blu-ray release. I dunno, just my two cents. |
