Default Help with speaker wiring (floor plates) for new construction and then some!

Any help recommendations much appreciated. I'm helping my brother with his new condo. Basically they haven't put the floor down yet so he wants to run the wires for everything before that happens.

So running wiring for rear speakers, and I am also starting to
think about anything else I should run under the floor. He doesn't want to run wires up the walls or do ceiling speakers.

I see lots of wall plate applications but nothing for floors.. Any thoughts or links?

EDIT: He is now thinking wall plates would look better. Flooring is hardwood. He doesn't want to do the work himself so is an electicion the way to go or somebody specifically related to A/V installs? Seems like a simple enough tasks.

I think he would want floor plates by the receivers as well as plates behind his couch and another set in his bedroom.

Is there a way to show diagrams from MS word?

Open up the baseboards and run the wires behind.

I am certainly no expert, but I wonder if you would have problems running the cables under the floor: e.g. uneven floor, increased chance of cable failure

Thanks for the input.. He just informed me that he thinks he wants to go with wall plates now. He doesn't want to do the work himself. Electricion the way to go or should he use somebody specifically specializing in AV installs?

Depending on your area will depend on how qualified an electrician may be. The other option would be contacting an AV installer.

I don't think you can with that type of plug in , If you could get A banana plug to go in there it might damage the banana plug by squishing the end of it on the speaker . Yes you can on the receiver .

cB is right, you can use banana plugs( http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2 ) on the receiver end.

You can use these( http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2 ) on the speaker end. They are designed to work with the spring clip terminals found on your speakers, but I don't know if it they would be better than twisted bare wire.

Is that like a French electrician? LOL. I, myself am an electrician and us electrician's are qualified to do this. Some electricians are narrow minded and may not be experienced in low/volt or A/V. If you plan to hire someone, I would first find out if there is an Audio/Video specialist in your area. Call them and tell them what you need to do. Find out how much they charge as it may be less than having an electrician come out. If they cannot run wires through walls(without proper licensing), as is the case here in Oregon. You may need to call an electrician. If you do, make sure to ask for someone experienced in home theater installations.

Not to insult any electricians, but there will be some that would pull the AV wiring right along with the electric. You want to avoid running low-volt (AV) wiring with electric. At least 18" apart (is that still the recommended norm?). If and when you cross any electric with AV, you should attempt to do so at a 90-degree angle.

just my 2¢

Putting the wiring in the floor would be a nice touch. Have your electrician run smurf tube or EMT (depending on local codes) and floor boxes and pull CL3 wire (more durable than CL2). Since the unit is under construction he better get someone licensed to do the work so he doesn't fail any inspections and delay the building process. If I knew where you were located I could better tell you about any local amendments to the NEC.

This is advice coming from a Licensed Electrician of 22 years.
