A Chinese comedy called Hi, Mom is currently the highest grossing movie of 2021. This movie has grossed an astonishing $822,054,381.
No American comedy (that was primarily a comedy) has ever grossed anything close to that, and this is on the heels of/ midst of a global pandemic! How legitimate are such figures as it seems to be an absurd amount of money for a comedy to make, one that has only been released in China, Australia and Singapore so far. |

A number of domestic films have grossed huge numbers in China. So far though, most films from China with huge box office performance overwhelmingly relied on the market in China to make said numbers. In other words, not many of the films are doing big numbers in markets across Europe or the Americas.
And that's not really a problem either for the films themselves; clearly the film industry and market is large enough to support them. But unlike the blockbusters from Hollywood, the film industry in China hasn't been able to consistently export many films or franchises. I can think of various ways they can try to make that happen, but we'll see what happens. As for the performance coming from a comedy, different markets are interested in different things. One could just as easily ask why a Star Wars film can gross over $900M in the US while making so comparatively little in China. |

Won't be surprised if watching nationalistic Chinese movies actually brings up one's social credit score.

This made me chuckle. I'm still a bit ignorant of the total details of the social credit thing but it's funny, while also depressing. But it sounds about right to what I've somewhat read of it. |

If you want less freedom by all means move to China and enjoy, you won't have to worry about people having a choice again.

China locked down for 3 months and now there are practically zero cases and life is back to normal. In fact, when I say "back to", it's been back to for at least a year. Americans on the other hand, are still complaining about wearing masks, still refusing to take widely available vaccines and are still dying needlessly. America really cannot take any short term pain, which is why there is no real hope for the world. Covid is pathetic compared to climate change. Is America the only country that didn't even have one proper lockdown? |

Yeah, but that doesn’t match with his cinemas are close to ending rubbish. He is seeing a reflection of what the film world looks like post COVID and he doesn’t like it. If the news was negative he would be quoting it as gospel.

2012 China, yeah definitely, it was a capitalist free for all, in all but name. Loved it over there. But the current leader is old-school communist and there was definitely a different vibe when I went there in 2018. Such a shame as i thought China was coming along worderfully.
