Question Should Amazon recommend BD now? (Update: Amazon & DVD Empire endorse BD)

Much like Best Buy has announced.

They should. Why stick even more folks with discs and players that are no longer viable? Even to their own manufacturer?

Amazon should make their customer's aware that HD DVD is obsolete, and that Blu-ray is the High Def format of the future.

They should go exclusive to blu-ray now in relation to what else is going on in the industry but I do understand why they have'nt just yet.. Amazon has got to be the number one place that HD-DVD has been sold this last year or so I can see why they'd want to wait a little longer to get rid of inventory and generate some more sales.. it's not they're problem what someone picks to purchase at the end of the day. It's got to be soon though surely..

Yes. The should endorse blu. It would be unfair and dishonest i believe for anyone to recommend buying HD DVD without at least informing the buyer of the current market situation.

Well Amazon doesn't have "shelf space" like Best Buy, so they don't really have to.
They should recommend it over HD DVD, but that doesn't mean they should drop HD DVD. I personally don't care either way, since all the content will now be coming out to Blu-ray, it is only a matter of time till no one cares about HD DVD anymore anyways.
They should promote BD over HD DVD, but they can choose to keep HD DVD as long as they want.

Amazon like many other retailer are getting their "ducks" in a row. Keep in mind that Toshiba US has been closed since Friday evening (US holiday). Amazon like others will not want to get styuck with the players. Like Bill Hunt has said things are happening fast (with the software too).

I think the player will be pulled off line before the week is over. I'm not sure about the movies. They could be sent back or a fire sale (think 5 for $40) with the backing of the studios. No retailer will take a bath of the media. So it will be take it all back or give us cash to sell it off

Well their Blu-ray discussion threads are pro HD DVD because somebody decided to redirect the HD-DVD.com forum there.

I suspect Amazon will continue to sell HD-DVD disks as long as supply is available. Possibly with a warning similar to that included on their WB HD-DVD's. Until Toshiba pulls the plug, there may not be much they can do (other than include a Blu-ray vs HD-DVD studio comparison on each HD-DVD hardware page. Of course, after tomorrow there may be no need for Amazon to list any HD-DVD hardware (if Toshiba pulls product off the shelf as rumored).

Default Amazon.com to Support Blu-ray as the Digital Format of Choice for Customers

Amazon.com to Support Blu-ray as the Digital Format of Choice for Customers

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In an effort to help demystify high-definition entertainment for consumers, Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) today announced its support for Blu-ray as the digital format of choice for customers. As part of this announcement, Amazon.com will more prominently promote Blu-ray hardware and software products on its website.

“The high-definition landscape is rapidly changing, and consumers are looking for guidance on how to make the best high-definition buying decisions,” said Peter Faricy, vice president of movies and music at Amazon.com. “Our customers have clearly voiced their support for the Blu-ray format. Blu-ray titles have increased from just over half of our high-definition sales to over three-quarters of our high-definition sales since early January. In order to best serve our customers, Amazon is recommending Blu-ray as the preferred digital format and will continue to carry the ‘Earth’s Largest Selection’ of Blu-ray products.”

Amazon.com currently carries a wide array of Blu-ray hardware and software products including players, Blu-ray discs, and the Sony PlayStation 3. For the hundreds of thousands of HD DVD owners who may still wish to purchase products for that format, Amazon will continue to carry a wide assortment of HD DVD products, including the broadest selection of HD DVD movie titles.

Why shouldn't they? The news wasn't broken by Blu-ray.com so why shouldn't someone post it and link to their source?

Seriously? There was bound to be 10 different threads on this anyways so that people could talk about it. Who cares if a new member is the one who started it. He's probably a new convert from the red camp and we should welcome him to our group.

Ease up, would ya?

Welcome s@m!

GOOD JOB AMAZON! I'm glad things are happening swiftly. Standing ovation for Blu-ray. What a comprehensive beatdown of the other format! My checkcard awaits new BD titles from our new friends at Universal. Lets Go Paramount (and Weinstein).
