Default Sony to allow HD over component, for now

Quote:
Sony Pictures also announced this week that it would not invoke the "Image Constraint Token" or ICT on its initial Blu-ray Disc releases. What is the "Image Constraint Token" or ICT? It's the software instructions that tells the high-definition signal to either pass or not pass via component video. We don't know what the other Hollywood Studios will do. Its heartening to hear that Sony is not turning component video off just yet. Although, the rumor that I heard recently is that component video would be turned by 2010 on all next-generation high-definition disc players and recorders. I hope not.

As far as the ICT is concerned, with digital inputs/outputs you will be fine. The resolution will not be forced to downresolve. As far as the actual content getting to your display, If you only have a DVI input on your display, and it's not HDCP compliant, you won't be seeing anything. Come to think, I'm not sure if there were even TVs that had ONLY a DVI connector that wasn't HDCP compliant. I know the old Sony 40XBR700 wasn't HDCP compliant. I think that only had component inputs though.

yes, you are correct. I had been planning to buy a Sony GDM-FW900 CRT monitor some time ago for future HD movie viewing in the computer room, however with doing more research about AACS, HDCP and the big snafu of the video-cards not really being fully HDCP compliant, I decided to hold off. It still is a fantastic monitor for current gaming though if you're into the big CRT old-school style monitors. I'm glad I didn't buy it since I learned from buying my HD set at launch is to always give time for a new tech to settle in and gain some roots.

I did mention that I was going to get the Blu-ray player and movies, but considering we are at the zenith of launch time, I think I just may by the movies instead and wait on the player. Hopefully with the next gen of BD players, it will still accept this new discs to play full HD over component. Who know.....

No HDCP compliant monitors won't matter yet since you won't be watching Blu-ray disks on a computer for a while anyways since you need an HDCP compliant monitor (almost none exist), an HDCP compliant video card (none currently exist), an HDCP compliant O/S (none till nov 06 for windows vista), and likely an HDCP compliant motherboard which I doubt any are either, basicaly watching HD movies on a computer won't be posible till end of 06 begining of 07 at the earliest.

You're forgetting something. Your home-cinema HDTV set will also need HDCP support.

Many HDTV set is HDCP compliant, just computer monitors aren't. Mostly only older HDTV sets that have only component inputs and some DVI sets aren't, I belive any TV with HDMI inputs are as HDCP compliant, haven't seen one that wasn't, my TV which is 1 1/2 years old is HDCP compliant.

Idd... For some reason...
However, the Coca Cola company always releases new products here in Belgium first, to see if it takes off. Very wierd indeed.

Default hdmi

Could some one post blu-ray players specification?
because it would be dumb to only have hdmi input and output as i like to hook my computer monitor to watch bd movies that are noncompressed.

hope movie companies never put out fullscreen movies ever again.
and please no more mpeg 2

You are in for some disappointment on that one.

However, if you can tell what kind of compression is being used on any of these discs by looking at them, they are not good enough.

Cheers!

I don't really care about the codec anymore. H.264 High Profile would do great tho and VC-1 too, if properly configured. As long as the picture is true HD...
