Default Sony Blu-Ray upscaling via Component?

Will any of the present or soon to be released SONY Blu-Ray players provide upscaling to 720p or 1080i via Component Video? or does it only pass 480p?

Jim

Only 480p. The Blu-ray & DVD spec does not allow for upconversion over component.

It will play content at it's native format over Component. If your content is 1080i, it will display 1080i over component. It will not upscale standard DVD at anything higher tahn 480p, but Blu-Ray discs will play at 1080.

I read this online:

"Oppo DV-970HD player does upconvert on Component, with the only caveat that it works on non DRM media. So anything encrypted will only upconvert on HDMI."

"The Oppo player referenced upscales non-CSS films which is basically limited to burned dvd's, home, and public domain movies."

probably has absolutely nothing with your question, but technically this dvd player can upconvert using component...with a few dtrings attached.

I run my S300 over component. I can testify 480p at best for DVD. I get a great 1080i picture, but my set does not support 1080p or the 24fps. I think it does a 3:2 pull down, but only with the original remote which sits in a draw.

But don't let that deter you from buying blu-ray. The movies still blow me away.

Actually, it is the CSS license agreement that does not allow DVDs to be upscaled over component. Rather outdated philosophy now...
