Default My first 3D demo, the good and bad

Just yesterday a Best Buy 50 miles south of where I live got hooked up for a complete 3D demo, using the Samsung 7000 and their new blu-ray player and glasses. Since I'm addicted to 3D, for no sensible reason, I just had to make the journey to see this thing. Here's what I experienced, positively and negatively...

The Picture--Impressive. Very impressive indeed. The sales manager bypassed the demo disc and put in 'Monsters vs. Aliens' in its entirety, giving me the chance to fully appraise the picture over a long period, and I judged it as being a little better than when the movie played in the theater. It was slightly sharper, brighter and more saturated. Of course, this was an animated movie, which always looks good, but it was nevertheless top drawer. I saw no flickering whatever, and only one small slightly-ghosted image for a fraction of a second. I have to believe that this display quality will be quite similar for all brands of 3DTVS, so I see it as a big selling point for the technology.

The Glasses--I watched the movie for about forty minutes and never thought about the glasses. I would venture to guess that your Home Theater experience will mirror your experience in the theater, good or bad. By the way, I wear regular glasses, and have never had a problem putting these things over them. It's a non-issue for me.

Part of my negative impression has to do not with the technology, but with the Samsung 7000 itself. For one thing, it's edge-lit, and I most definitely could see the edge lighting effect. And for that reason alone, I myself wouldn't buy this TV. The good news, apparently, is that the 8000 series is coming in April or May, and it's back-lit. The BB electronics sales manager told me that the display on the 8000 will be even better, and it's supposed to only cost about $200 more. We'll see.

And on this series of TVs the chrome stand looks really bad to me, like a throwback to Early American Mobile Home. If ever a TV needed to be wall-mounted, this is it. As for overall styling, I get the feeling that Sony's slick design will make the Samsung look like a sick design. As for 3D (and 2D) display quality in an LED, though, I'd buy Samsung and wouldn't even bother looking at any of the others. Just my preference.

I would imagine that most of us who want 3D won't buy into it until at least the Holiday season, and then not until we compare various technologies. But if what I saw from the BB demonstration is any indication, 3D for the home is certainly going to catch on with consumers, and I believe that by the fourth quarter of 2011 it's going to be very big indeed.

I saw the same demo you did at Best Buy today. I must say the 3-D was better than I thought it was going to be. I'm not interested in this the Samsung 7000 series though and will wait for some better model's of t.v to come out and maybe by then the price will go down. I'm thinking lat 2011 or early 2012, before I upgrade to all this 3-D tech. Who know's maybe by then it will be a bust and there will be something new.

I saw a display of the Panasonic 3D but didn't see the Samsung. If I had the money for it, I would definetly buy the Panasonic

Default 3D Experiences

Hello

I have seen many Home Theater 3D Demonstrations for several years now, by almost any company providing them.

I simply wanted to say that currently Panasonic, as being presented on their present 2010 Panasonic 3D Tour is simply the best, so if it is available to you, and you have an interest in seeing it at it's best; try to make it. This unique opportunity is only for about a month, so keep that in mind if you have an interest.

It is definitely worth it to see this evolving technology at it's best, if it interests you at all.

If interested; try searching for 2010 Panasonic 3D Tour Dates.

Also; if not available in your area; Sony Style Stores also are always demonstrating 3D as well, that does look quite good as well.

Thank You

i saw the samsung 3d demo as well... thought it was cool, but then got kinda eh with it... for me, certainly not worth the investment price... HOWEVER, I am thinking if I were to eventually buy a projector... i would not think twice about a 3D projector... then I would have the full immersive feeling!

I must say I saw a display at my local one not knowing they had it. I must say I'm impressed with it. But the price for the glasses isn't there for me. A rep (I don't know where from) said "give it a couple years, I hear sony is trying to come up a system that doesn't use glasses." I didn't know what to make of that. 3DTV that doesn't use glasses would be impresseive to me. but then Id have to reupgrade my current system for 3d and thats not a selling point for me being that I just finished with my upgrades.

Correction: All Samsung 2010 LED TV's will be edge-lit.......no full backlighting this year. That includes the 8000 and 9000 series.

I haven't seen the Sammy's yet but did see the Sony at the SonyStyle store in Manhattan. I really only looked at it for a couple minutes but they had a demo of soccer and I have to say it was pretty impressive, not perfect, but very impressive.

Given the huge success of 3D movies as of late, I have NO doubt that 3D is the future and will absolutely be mainstream within a couple of years, and all TV's will be 3D capable within 5 years.

Red face Just a thought...

Wait 'til these companies start getting sued after a period of time-regarding consumer complaints that peoples' vision has suffered due to over-exposure. Your eyes were not designed to see in this depth perspective on a regular basis. Look at it like reading the newspaper or any literature in 3D over a period of time... What do you think will happen to your eyes?

like someone else already said earlier-all of the new Samsungs are going to be edge-lit. The B8500 was the last backlit model.
The problem I have with their 3D LED is that you can't turn off the 240Hz while you are in 3D mode and that you can't change your picture settings - it changes automatically to "Standard" so if you have some custom settings or if you've had your TV professionally calibrated - too bad. So for right now I like the way the Panny 3D works better but it's gonna be a while until I buy a 3D set. I just bought my Sammy 46A950 backit LED a couple months ago!

I was at bb yesterday and I saw the pana and the samsung, the pana had a video of a city and the samsung monsters vs aliens, I felt like the panasonic looks better, but both were impressive. The only think I won't get right away in a 3d is the price of the glasses, way too expensive. Also I think if you going to get one you have to go big, a list 55".
The picture looks more vivid and popping out of the tv, I think it looks better than the theaters just smaller.

I checked out the Samsung, Panasonic, and Mitsubishi 3D last weekend and I feel the Panasonic is the best bang for your buck hands down. My Best buy had it next to a Kuro and it looked as good if not better (when viewing on 2d mode) IMHO. Hopefully by summer you will be able to pick one up for $1800 or so (given they are $2499 now)...

Huh?!?! Eyes weren't designed to see in depth perspective on a regular basis?! Last time I checked I have seen depth my entire life and no eye issues so far. This is the silliest post against 3D I have ever seen.

I demoed the Samsung about a week ago. Finally found a Panasonic today. I think the Panasonic is better. I'm impressed with both though. I will be getting a 3D tv now. I'm still going to wait a year or so. Think of how much better the t.v's will be in just a year too.

It looked good, when it started to move fast you lost the 3-d effect but it still was ok, Not worth the investment to me.
