Default TV AD's TOO LONG,TOO LOUD & TOO MANY?

TV ad's drive me crazy. They are TOO LONG & TOO MANY!You just start getting into the show & they cut to another round of commercials. If you start surfing you end up going from 5 minutes clips of shows at a time between commercials. What's on your mind about it?

I generally agree, but Id also like to add too stupid. It seems like 90 percent of the commercials are just dumb, like I cant believe they thought that was funny dumb. that's said I would be fine if they would get rid of the loud commercials. This is by far the most annoying thing about commercials.

I never really noticed that commercials were loud until I read about it in another thread. It's really annoying. I don't have my TV volume on that loud sometimes and then this Cablevision commercial comes blasting in. Isn't there some rule being passed that restricts this crap? I hope it gets put into place soon. God damn it, that is aggravating.

I purposely don't watch shows when they are on just so I can record them and skip the commercials when I watch them.

Yup..as much as I'd like to watch Lost when it airs live, I still wait about 10 mins so I can skip the commercials. Why make the suspense even more? lol

Yeah what's a commmm...mercial? I don't think I've seen one of those in 9 years. 30 second skip for the win. I loved the first season of Fringe. "Fringe will return in 90 seconds." What I heard was "Fringe will return in 3 clicks."

*full disclosure, I used to produce and edit commercials.

Maximum volume is regulated and the maximum volume of commercials cannot be louder than the actual programming. Most commercials have highly compressed dynamic range and hence appears much louder.

Until producers and distributors find a new revenue model, however, we are stuck with commercials. Like many others, I watch most programming delayed by 10-15 minutes on my DVR.

Here in New Zealand, there might actually be something done about the fact commericals are always 'louder' than the show. Advertisers and production companies always said the commericals were never 'louder', its just that they usually have uncompressed audio. But the fact remains, they are still louder no matter how you put it.

Quote:
Source: Help may be at hand for television viewers tired of reaching for the volume control every time there is a commercial break.

The International Telecommunications Union has endorsed a standard for measuring audio volumes to ensure that television advertisements really are not louder than the programmes they interrupt. The result will be a measure of "target loudness", described as a numerical value.

Broadcasters deny boosting volumes to appease advertisers, but the ITU suggests viewers annoyed by variations in volume may not always be imagining things.

Television technicians measure the strength of the electronic sound signal, but the Geneva-based industry body says that is not a direct measure of how loud the TV sound will be to viewers.

Television New Zealand technology manager Peter Ennis says it is hard to define an objective standard for loudness, which is subjective. The ITU has been working on the problem for eight years and its endorsement of a standard is a breakthrough, he says. TVNZ is highly likely to adopt it, and will be talking to other broadcasters.

Mr Ennis hopes the standard could be applied in New Zealand in a year, in time for TVNZ to apply it when it undertakes the massive job of transferring its programme archives from tape to computer disk – after which altering the volumes could prove harder.

The ITU says the advent of digital television, with higher quality audio, has made variations more noticeable.
As for the frequency of ads, we were watching the first episode of Lost the other night, and by god the commericals felt like they were happening every 5 minutes. I know technically they can only air the same amount, as the show only takes up a 60min time slot, but sometimes it just feels like they never end. The thing I hate the most is when they put ads where there is clearly not a spot for them (in the middle of a scene), or when the channel title card comes up before the commercials begin, but you can still here music from the show, or even noise, so you know they are cutting in early.

Im often quite tempted to 'live pause' the show for 15min just so I can fast forward the commericals.

I hate when I am trying to watch a show quietly (IE, I am the only person awake in the house) and then the commercials come on and it's suddenly like you are in the IMAX it's so loud!

We will return after these messages. COMMERCIAL OF DOOOM! EXPLOSION! KILL YOUR EARS, WAKE YOUR BABY!

Yeah...

I just can't watch live sports on a delay. It would be easier but it kills me to not know what is happening live. I watch all other programming on a DVR but not sports.
