Theoretically PCM, DTS-HD MA, and Dolby TrueHD(with dialnorm disengaged) are all equivalent given the same master soundtrack and are the highest fidelity possible. It gets a little messier when you start talking about the lossy codecs.

The various flavors of lossy DTS and Dolby Digital and their sound quality all depend on what bitrate the respective soundtrack is. DTS-HD HR is the best lossy codec(ignoring Dolby Digital Plus since no BD uses it) but is rarely used. Most would agree that DTS at 1509 kbps is the next best lossy soundtrack(the same as found on dvd). At the next lower level is Dolby Digital at 640 kbps and DTS at 768 kbps, which are very close to each other in sound. Next lower in quality is the lower bitrate versions of Dolby Digital like 448 kbps, which make up the bulk of modern dvds.

Default audio codec rankings

Does anyone know of a website that gives me this info? Maybe one with an illustration of the order of audio codecs from best to worst or vice versa? I found one the other day but now I can't remember it.

These are all great articles.

But is there a chart somewhere that shows the bitrate for the different codecs? I've got a friend who thinks Dolby Digital is the end-all of audio. These prove that he's wrong - but I really want to show him HOW wrong he is.

Then pop in a movie that has Dolby Digital and PCM on it. Show him the bit rate meter. The bit rates on movies will vary based on what is involved on the track. The Dolby track will be around 448kbps (maxing out at 640kbps), A PCM track can be 7Mbps. If that doesn't do it, nothing will...

Unfortunately, my Panny BD30 doesn't have a bit rate meter. One of the few disappointments I've had with it.

hmm...If your receiver can handle the high def codecs, then pick out one with a basic/more traditional tracks, then switch to the highdef codec.
