Default Considering some Top 100 Countdowns

I've been kicking around ideas for video projects, 2 of which are Gaming related documentaries: 100 Greatest Games of the 80s and 100 Greatest Games of the 90s. And yes, I've seen similar concepts on VH1.

I figured I would ask any willing contributors for their votes, and come up with a system for scoring, then get some clips of game footage and discussion.

First thing I thought of was that Gaming decades are a lil strange. For my vote on the 80s, I'm having trouble even coming up with 100 games. In the 80s, you have most of the first 3 generations of gaming systems, a sample of 4th gen, along with early PC and arcade titles.

The 90s however, will involve many tough voting decisions. There, you have the end of 3rd gen, almost all of 4th and 5th gens, and even a drop of 6th. PC gaming expanded heavily in the 90s as well, and arcades shined too.

Feel free to vote now if you want, I'll record it for future reference. Or if you've thoughts on these projects in general, by all means share.

^ Very nice. Many of those I did indeed think of, but some are news to me.

I'm a have to make some time for old games later this year.

If you're having trouble coming up with 100 games from the 1980s, then you're not as OG as I originally thought! The 1980s is where it all (really) started! Have you checked out ign.com at all? I believe they do a top 100 video games thing every year. You might get some good ideas from there. One thing I've found about their lists, though, is they're very FPS-heavy. That probably speaks to the demographic of the people making the list.

I've come up with a few more since then; lil closer to 100 now. If I do the countdown it will likely involve combining some series into single entries if the sequels play nearly the same way (ie Mega Man 1-2).

I doubt a list of games from the 80s would be FPS-heavy. My plan is to gather votes, do the math, then count 'em down.

I'd like to see how your list looks. I love the subjectiveness of "top-x" lists and always enjoy checking them out.

...and yes, you're right: a 1980s top-100 list would not be FPS-heavy; I was just saying if you look for games on IGN's yearly list, it won't have as many of the true classics in there as it should. As we get further away from that decade, people are forgetting their roots, and that's reflected in all the "best ever" lists we see nowadays.

I play all the big games on the new systems. I really get into them, sometimes playing for 4-8 a day on weekends. But usually in a week or two they sit on the shelf and I go back to the classics. The arcade games from around 78-84. I would be willing to bet I've played Donkey Kong more than I've played my PS3.

I'll put my vote on my webspace soon; still need to finish it. I assure you my vote will count equally with all others I get.

I played some Ikari 2 last night, along with some Shining in the Darkness. Nice to play something simpler time to time.

I gotta say, I'd be curious hangin' out with many of my forum brothers, but based on these retro game talks I'd venture to say having one or both of you over for a day of old school gaming would be really cool. Shame we all live on opposite corners of the country.

I gotta throw in Final Fight and Quack Shot (Sega Genesis). Definitely a favorite of mine. Final Fight was just great co-op fun. Oh, and Moonwalker. One fo the best arcade games ever. Yes, seriously.

CZAR, those in any kind of order? I can save your vote and all but I'll need an order of favorites as games in ppl's top 10 get more points than lower down.

Hey Thanks Monkey.

I can take it as it is and sort it by decade, and you're free to add to it if you want. Remember that my current project is 100 Greatest games of the 80s and 100 Greatest of the 90s, so up to 100 from each is permitted (or even a few more as I currently intend to lump near-identical games into single entries). Many of yours, while fine games and all, are from the 2000+ era. Although..I could save them too in case I decide to do that countdown afterwrds. But for now I'm gathering votes on the 80s and the 90s. Also remember: a game in your Top 10, Top 20 or so gets more points than one further down.

Well I saved it in Excel, so if I'm not too lazy I'll try to get some years thrown in. Perhaps a sort after as well.
