Default ACER on Blu-ray. Much bigger deal than you think!

I'm surprised there isn't the celebration around this news that I think it deserves. The Acer annoucement last week was MAJOR news. Here's hoping the Blu-ray community starts throwing Acer some more love.

Agreed?

Working at Staples I know how big this news is. In the last 2 weeks, as we've seen the back to school shopping crowd grow exponentially, I've noticed that our stock of Acer laptops has sold through and been replenished in huge quantities. The brand is synonymous with quality at a reasonable price. I can only imagine that the addition of BD drives to their products will enlighten SO MANY in the future. In fact, it may do more for Blu-ray than HD DVD having standalone players at the $200 mark would do for them!!! (I think that last sentence makes sense)

There are still a fair amount of Toshiba products on the market that need to be converted, but that's unlikely to happen. Otherwise, the answer to your question is YES!

I've showed my love right after the announcement. I own an Acer laptop, as a matter of fact I'm typing away on it right now, so as soon as they come out with one with a BD-ROM drive, I'm sold.

Acer has been making laptops with HD DVD drives for quite some time now. Good to see them neutral though.

Acer have always been neutral, The ship some laptop with HD-DVD and some with Blu-ray. Actually, their Flagship product. The Travelamte 8210 have a Blu-ray option since day one. Joining BDA may mens they are leaving the HD-DVD camp.

Command of the retail space is really important to this format war.

The HD DVD supporters will not ever admit it, but if by some twist of fate HD DVD should come out ahead, HDM is permanently doomed to be a niche product.

Blu-ray is making inroads on many application fronts:

- Computer optical drives (readers AND burners - more affordably than HD DVD, I might add!)

- Readable disc media (more capacity, much wider availability)

- Consumer recording devices (DVR, HD cams, etc.)

- Game console media (PS3, duh!)

- Plus of course high definition movies.

Where is HD DVD present? High def media, where it's losing to Blu-ray. Minimal optical presence for PCs (Toshiba can include every PC with an HD DVD burner next year but it doesn't change the fundamental logistics problem of having less storage and more expensive burning hardware - which will in turn produce very little traction in the marketplace).

The trends from CD, DVD, SACD, and DVD-A are clear:

Optical discs that have multiple applications survive and go mainstream. Ones that are dedicated to only a small enthusiast niche inevitably fail and become marginal niches.

You're forgetting another significant one: Lenovo! For those of you who don't know who Lenovo is, they are the new IBM.

i dunno. Some Acer laptops can be found for less than a blu-ray player! Although an Acer laptop with a blu-ray drive might become the cheapest of laptops, probably about $500 cheaper than a Vaio.

I didn't realise they weren't a member before that announcement, because they have had Blu-ray laptops out for a while now.

It was news to me also as I have seen their notebooks and even bought my kids one for homework and it had an HD DVD drive in it. I had seen the BR versions but they were on average 500-700 dollars more expensive. I wasn'tr willing to pay that for a notebook for a 10 year old and a 6 and 4 year old to use. As it was I paid 1400 for the one they got and felt it was to much for the kids but my wife liked it and so that is what we got them.

HP has released dual HD DVD reader / Blu-ray writer in Pavilion PC line. HP business notebook only has BD drive exclusively.
