If you love movies, then Daybreakers is a must own, IMO.
I say this while not even really liking the movie. I thought Daybreakers would be an action flick with horror elements, but it was one of the bloodiest goriest movies I ever saw. And the film had too many plot holes for me. I consider this blu a must own because of the outstanding making of documentary. Daybreakers offers one of the most extensive documentaries on the film making process. The only other releases I've seen at this level have been Blade 2 and Lord of the Rings EE. The documentary offered intimate behind the scenes look from the very beginning in 2006 when these two brothers cooked up this idea for a script. While I know from previous docs that film making is a difficult and time consuming process, this one just really gave me a new appreciation for the tight rope frustrations and challenges that occur especially on small films where budgets are so restrictive. For example, one of the brothers talks about flying 23 hours straight to New York to have a 25 minute meeting with Ethan Hawke and then fly back. That is the type of sacrifices you make to get the movie done. Another part explains insurance bonds and how the directors lose a lot of money if they fail to get the shooting done on time. To make matters worse, a deadly virus breaks out on set, and sickens many of the cast and crew. The producer also breaks his neck in a car wreck. One prop, William Dafoe's bow gun, had to be redesigned a mere day before shooting. Apparently, the directors wore many hats to save money, even doing some of the special effects themselves in an apartment. I just find it really interesting to see firsthand the tremendous amount of work and effort to bring a simple independent vampire movie to the screen. |
