Banding is when you don't have a smooth progression from one texture or luminescence to another. For example, if you have a scene that is underwater or foggy, and you have light passing through the fog or water, you may see a very obvious graduation in that scene instead of a smooth transition in the amount of light in the fog or water.

Not a great explanation I guess . . . the underwater scenes in Superman Returns are problem the best examples I've seen.

That picture is a pretty good example as well. In the picture on the right, you have a very smooth progression. In the one on the left, not so much. Usually you won't see scenes that bad, but Superman Returns has some scenes that look almost like the picture in the middle.

When it comes to artifacts, color banding is what I'm most senstive of, I even traded in my infocus projector because of really bad posterization, then again that wasn't so subtle. When I see a color banding artifact, I tend to feel tense, but mostly it comes from source material.

A technical explanation for posterization and banding in Blu-rays, with photo examples...

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=840193

It still can occur in real-life film, but it is easiest to recognize in animation.

Skies are the easiest to spot this in on "real-life" movies, IMO.

The Reaping... suffers from terrible banding in the red water scenes.

But for the most part animation suffers from it the worst, though Blu-ray isn't even close to how bad it was on DVD.

Default Banding, Artifacting, Crush, DNR

I am unfamiliar with all these terms. I read blu ray reviews all the time but never know for sure what they mean when they say the above words for descriptions. Can someone break it down for me?? That would be great!!

Also I have a SOny 52inch Bravia with 120hz and on the setting of 120hz during fast motion scenes in movies there is a weird ripple effect that surrounds objects when they move in the screen fast. For example; 2012 around Woody Harelson it has the blurry ripple look around his figure as the camara pans around him. Same with Avatar and most other movies. WHat is happening? Is that the 120hz issue? Would a 240hz have that same effect during fast scenes? And what is what I am describing called? Is that banding?

Thanks!!

How do you get your picture to show up below your name? I added one but it is not under my username.

Color Banding:

The one to the left you can see what banding means.

Crush: I think the reviewers are referring to crushed blacks, which means not so black, greyish or something like that.

DNR "Digital Noise Reduction":
Is often used for grain:

You can see the fake grain added to the right, all those random dots that are inherent to film, it's all natural and I love it and some hate it unfortunately. When DNR is overused by technicians to remove the grain, DETAIL goes with it too, I'm not for using DNR in almost any case. And some describe grain as "mosquitoes"

The "weird ripple effect" I think I remember reading about, is that LCD cannot handle fast motion, some LCD tv sets have a feature called "Motion Flow" to remedy that problem, although the "Motion Flow" makes everything look too smooth and "documentary" like, which is very wrong because it actually changes the look and feel of the movie, of course that's only my opinion.

As stated I'm far from an expert on the matter so I could be wrong in some of the explanations I've given, hope that helped!.

But not exactly sure what "Artifacting" stands for, but I bet it's not good.

No, that is great!! That really did help, I also love the picture examples you were able to add!! Yeah my tv has the motion flow but it gives it that smooth motion but then it has the weird ripple effect. I need to try it with the motion flow 120hz off and see if it is any different. But again, thank you!
