Question Slim Vs. Fat, why is Fat considered a BR player and not the Slim?

I have a Fat 80GB version, with the 4 ports in front. Though I have no BR titles, I will be picking up Avatar before the end of the week... and then wondered something.

I've been told that the Fat versions of the PS3's are BR players whereby the Slim versions are not. I was under the impression that they both play BR disks. Am I missing something, or is there some technicality that gives reason for this statement?

I don't care about technicalities as long as my PS3 plays BR disks.

Thanks in advance,

SuD

PS3 games are Blu-ray discs. If the Slim cannot play Blu-ray discs then that means it can't play PS3 games or for that matter Blu-ray movies. So in other words, someone lied to you.

All PS3's play blu-ray discs. Buy Avatar with confidence.

It plays blu-rays, although some say not quite as well as the porker PS3s but not really anything to worry about.

SOME also say the world is flat. I wouldn't even consider this without some good evidence from a reliable source.

some of these claims are crazy... there is no performance difference between either models. The slim plays blus just as effectively, with the added hardware ability of bitstreaming HD audio to the receiver. It is definitely not an inferior bluray player...

Okay, just something that I heard here, my next player will be a slim either way. Well maybe, quite fond of the porker model.

I've had both, compared both, the slim's pq to me was alittle better but the 60gb fat was faster at loading discs.

My statement ... stated... I know that both are BR players and both play BR without an issue. It was the comment that the slim isn't actually a BR player, where the fat is a BR player.

I have no confidence issues on whether one will play BR versus the other. I was just trying to see if someone could clairify the comment. I am trying to find the comment or post where I read about the comparison and the statement that had me thinking.

To me, mine is a BR player that plays games too. That's the concept I used to sell my wife on the idea of getting a PS3 in the first place. Buying it used for $75 was the way I really got away with it, but now that she's addcited to LBP, I guess that it's a game console that will be playing bluray by the end of the week.

Thanks for the input folks. I was just hoping that someone saw the same post I did that made comment about some technicality between the two.

if you do happen to find it, definitely post it, i have no idea why anyone would say that, and i cant think of anything technical that would exclude it from being considered as a bluray player either, id like to see where this was said

Sturdy PS3, Classic PS3. Well exercised playing lots and lots of BDs.

FAT and PORKER does not describe my PS3. It only does everything almost.

a quick google :

If the results from a user-performed test are to believed, the PS3 Slim is slower than the old model when it comes to system boot times and loading of Blu-ray Disc movies, but the newer console comes out ahead when it's time to game.
