Analyst expects new Nintendo, Microsoft hardware by 2010

Industry analysts Pacific Crest Securities believe that successors to Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii should be on the market in two year's time.

The firm expects the industry to see peak sales in 2010, as the two companies roll-out new hardware and the current leaders in the handheld space also come to the end of their cycles.

"We believe that peak industry sales will occur in 2010, given that Microsoft will likely introduce its next console that year and Nintendo will likely launch before then," said Evan Wilson, reports GameSpot.

"Further, 2010 is also likely to coincide with the end of the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP cycles," he said.

Sony has always said that its latest console, the PlayStation 3, will have a ten year life cycle.

SCEE president David Reeves told GamesIndustry.biz last year that the the company hopes the PS3 will remain on the market for ten year's due to the built-in hard drive and the ability to upgrade the console firmware.

I believe it about Microsoft. However I think Nintendo will try to milk the Wii for a little longer than that.

Microsoft definitely, Nintendo I assume will milk it, but then what??? Can they really strike gold twice, but how?

damn... poor xbox fans have to shell out for another half-baked, gimped, and retarded console. hopefully they'll learn their lesson and go BD so they won't have a "next gen system" with "last gens storage medium".

and nintendo needs to quit it with these proprietiary optical discs... and an HD wii would be AWESOME

No way, they have only started only 2 years in, and 85% of gamers have not even switched yet. Sony is only 1 in and they go 5. I expect 2012 at the earliest. I want at least 4-5 years of more gaming with my $600 machine, i cannot afford to buy this hardware over and over...

The systems have a 5 year cycle before new systems are debued or even announced, it will not be 2010, BUT MORE LIKE 2012, And maybe by then PS3 will have sold a few more unites, at least enough to make it worht there while, so far even with the Blu-ray they have only scratched there own fan base, and the PS2 still outselld the PS3. It better have a 10 year life cycle!

PS1 (1995)
PS2 (2000)
PS3 (2006)

Xbox (2001)
360 (2005)

SNES (1990)
N64 (1996)
GameCube (2001)
Wii (2006)

If it's 2012 before the successor to the 360 comes, that will be the longest wait for any new console EVER.

2010 would be much more typical.

If you notice in the past, that each system had huge jumps in tech and PQ, but in the last generation change the jump , although there, was much smaller. I think they are maxing out what they can do at a "reasonably" affordable price while still pushing the tech. As for the early change for Xbox and Nintendo, both were losing money on the old system and therefore, it was good business to make the new systems. The new systems, although not huge money makes, are not money losers, so I think we will see them around for a bit longer than older systems.

You are going to have to explain to me how it is that the 360 would hold out longer than the PS2, when it is far less successful.

Jump in tech? Any drive larger than DVD + a hard-drive would be a massive jump in tech for the 360, which developers are already talking about it holding them back.

Jumps in graphic tech aren't everything. The 360 was rushed to market and is much less powerful than it should have been.

It makes perfect sense for Microsoft to be upgrading in 2010, it'll be showing it's age even worse over this year, much less next.

The real question is, would Microsoft just drop the 360 immediately like they did with the Xbox, or would they treat it to a more gradual change-over.

The only reason the PS2 is still around is because of the colossal failure of the PS3 during its 1st year, the majority that get it are getting it to watch BDs, but game sales the bread and butter of the game industry is dismal at best, this may change but not anytime soon, where as the 360 games sales are in the top 10 every month. The Wii alone should tell you graphics are not everything, but the fun factor is they is important to gamers, not to say PQ is not important. The
look amazing, I have 2 and love to have people over to play on system link, I am not saying the PS3 is a bad system, it will just take some more time to really catch on like the PS2. I am of the opinion that more than one system is good for the market, and for the gamer.

Nintendo have been talking about bringing out another Wii but with HD graphics and a HDD. The WiiHD perhaps. I'll try and find a link.

I kniow they are making one in new colors that can play DVDs this time, but I did not know about a HD one. This would be good, but I think it would lose to much money for them as they are aming games in SD that are selling great. But I could be wrong.

So selling the first million in less time than the PS2 did (in UK) is a failure?

PS2 is still going because it has the largest user-base of any console; what is it now, over 110 million? Developers aren't going to stop making games for it any time soon!! If anything, the PS2 caused the PS3 problems until Sony got the price right.

The ten year life cycle for the PS3 doesn't mean Sony won't introduce another console in 2012.

The first year really wasn't horrible in the first place, the wii was just a crazy first year, and in turn made the ps3 look bad when in actuality on point with ps2 sales which had no competition it's first year... secondly looking at 360 sales compared to ps3 is just dumb at this point since there are 11 mill 360 in the states versus the 4 ps3, which is why they outsell by such a big number. Worldwide the ps3 is holding it's own versus the 360, and once more games come out the ps2 fans will upgrade.

Dude you're so wrong its not even funny.

Look how long the PS1 was around (discontinued around 2004) even though the PS2 was a huge success. PS2 sales still do very well and they're incredibly profitable since the system is so cheap to manufacture. They still make a lot of money on the software as well. It has nothing to do with the PS3 being a "colossal failure"

When Sony says a "ten year life cycle" for the PS3, I doubt they mean 10 years before the next console hits. Its 10 years of production, with a new console in maybe the 6th year.

I was going to rip into this cat, but it seems that you and everyone else already did...

the PS2 should survive until 2Q 2009...after the holidays pretty much, unless things are still going well...

when the new playstation drops, that might be 2012...but the PS3 will probably be around until 2014...maybe 2015...

Xbox is all but dead, but the PS2 is still coming with games...not because the PS3 is a failure, but because there is still a market for it..

so let's get this straight, the Xbox came out a year after the PS2 and was retired before the PS2...

the 360 comes out a year before the PS3 and is pretty much going to be retired about 4+ years before the PS3...

in regards to gaming..Microsoft has been in the business of making money, Sony has been in the business of making a strong product....

the longer the PS3 goes on, the less talking points the 360 fanboys have...

gosh I sound like a fanboy here, but I guess 360 fanboys bring out the PS3 fanboy in me..

With the Wii I could see them making a move towards a stronger GPU/CPU as well as refining the movement of the Wiimote so high quality input and force feedback would be possible. Typically I'd see them using a GPU/CPU more in line with current 360/PS3 ability so they'd still have the massive price point advantage and they wouldn't alienate their low cost ultracasual base.

I guess its just me, but I get continually annoyed at everyone bundling the Wii in with the Xbox and PS3, the Wii is a toy compared to the other two! It is not in the same class, frankly I would compare the Wii with PSP before I would compare it to Xbox or PS3.

"Microsoft has been in the business of making money, Sony has been in the business of making a strong product"

Wow! Dumbest quote I've ever seen on this board. Get it straight, EVERY business is in the business of making money, including Sony.

Do you honestly think Sony exists for the sole purpose of making great products? No. They are in the business of profit, plain and simple. Now don't get me wrong, Sony DID make a great product in the PS3. However it's not like they were sitting in a board room saying "we dont' care if we make money or not. We just want to make a cool game system."

At the same time, do you honestly think Microsoft purposely set out to make a faulty system? Believe me, they would've preferred to avoid that headache! Now they are investing a billion dollars in repairs and replacements.

Really the story here is experience. Sony just has a lot more experience at hardware manufacturing than Microsoft does and it shows. Microsoft has more experience in software development and it shows with their development tools being much more user friendly than Sony's.

By 2010, Nintendo will really need a system that outputs HD.

As for Microsoft, no surprise there.

But if 2 new systems come out in 2010, look for PS4 in 2011.
