Microsoft sides with Nintendo in fight vs Sony
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O) sided with rival Nintendo Co. Ltd. (7974.OS) on Wednesday in the fight to unseat video game leader Sony Corp.(6758.T), saying many consumers will choose to buy both of their machines for the price of one PlayStation 3. The bad blood between Sony and Microsoft in the fight for dominance in the nearly $30 billion video game industry has escalated over the last few days, with both sides trading barbs at the E3 Expo, the video game industry's annual trade show. Microsoft entered the next-generation game console market first with its Xbox 360 last November. Sony aims to extend its market leadership with its upcoming PS3, while Nintendo plans to offer a new game machine called Wii in the fourth quarter. "Tell me why you would buy a $600 PS3?" Peter Moore, a Microsoft vice president, said in an interview. "People are going to buy two (machines.) They're going to buy an Xbox and they're going to buy a Wii ... for the price of one PS3." Microsoft predicted on Tuesday it will have 10 million Xbox 360 consoles in the market before Sony launches the PS3. The high-end Xbox 360 sells for $399, but it does not include a built-in high-definition DVD video player that comes with Sony's PS3. Sony plans to sell a premium PS3 model for $599 when it debuts in North America on November 17, and Nintendo has not yet disclosed pricing for Wii. Wii comes equipped with motion sensitive controllers to allow users to mimic the motion of wielding a sword or swinging a tennis racket. Moore then turned pitchman for Nintendo's Wii, the latest offering from the Japanese company that once dominated the video game industry. "People will always gravitate toward a competitively priced product -- like what I believe Wii will be -- with innovative new designs and great intellectual property like Mario, Zelda and Metroid," Moore told Reuters. Sony currently dominates the worldwide video game market with a 66 percent share, while Microsoft and Nintendo each hold 17 percent, according to Strategy Analytics. "We have 100 percent market share of the next-generation, and their job is to take that from us," said Moore. "When I think on everything that we've got going right now that is real versus what Sony promises to do six, seven months from now, obviously we feel very good about where we stand." LOST IN TRANSLATION Despite Microsoft's head start with the Xbox 360, the software giant still faces an uphill climb in Sony and Nintendo's home turf. Microsoft received a tepid response to its Xbox 360 debut in Japan and demand fell short of expectations during last year's holiday season when it sold about 100,000 machines. The company introduced a competitively priced console in Japan, but some of its game titles did not appeal to Japanese gamers. Moore expects upcoming role-playing games like "Lost Odyssey" and "Blue Dragon" from the creator of the popular "Final Fantasy" series to do well in Japan. "Quite frankly," said Moore, "if we're sitting here a year from now and things continue to fall flat, then we might say 'we don't know what to do anymore." Source: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...051100612.html Mmm... Quite changes it... However, Sony has nowadays 66% marketshare, while M$ and Nintendo both have 17% marketshare of the gaming industry. |

"Tell me why you would buy a $600 PS3?"
Haha - what a retard. It's a PS3. It will play everything from CDs to Bluray movies to PS1-PS3 games. I agree that they are just trying to dampen enthusiasm... Dampen all you want my friend... I bet the 6M PS3 units that Sony aim to make will all sell like hotcakes... haha. |

Hey Mr Moore, how about comparing the price of the 20gig PS3 and the price of an Xbox360 Core + hard drive + HD-DVD add on. What does that add up to Mr Moore?
Oh, we don't know because you won't tell us how much you're going to charge for the add on... But if you're going to match the 20gig PS3, it'll have to be dirt cheap, but then as it only outputs 720p, it is cheap. |

I'm amazed no one here yet has identified this very simply for what it is:
"The enemy of my enemy is my friend." If I were Nintendo, I'd be bristling from this arrogant condescension right now. Both Sony and MS have arrogantly written off Nintendo completely as a viable contender. Nintendo themselves has a made a point of casting themselves as different from the others, and they are. But Nintendo has been in this game longer than anyone and to look away from them would be foolhardy. And once yet again: You don't HAVE to buy the $600 PS3 to get a complete videogame system product. There's no doubt about it: This is going to be a lot closer and nastier console war and that's good news. Tighter competiton forces better quality, but this stance of MS's is so arrogant and condescending to Nintendo, it really makes me laugh. Nintendo, with their culture and background, would never align themselves with a company like Microsoft. The way I see it: The Xbox360 is the odd man out this time 'round. The last Xbox at least had the perk of having better hardware and you knew you could get multiplatform titles, occasional PC ports and such, and be off. That's not going to be good enough this time around. This time, Sony has the hardware advantage on top of the usual first and third party software support they've always enjoyed. Who cares if a few more titles are multiplatform at the same time? Where else are you going to play games like MGS4, the Final Fantasy series, Gods of War, and the rest of that? As a PC gamer primarily, there's almost nothing on the Xbox360 right now that I could care about, since I can those games, in usually better forms, on the PC anyways. The PS3 will have some of thoes same titles, but it and the Nintendo Wii both will offer games that I can't play anywhere else INCLUDING the PC. So, where I'm at: Nintendo, PS3, and my PC and I'm covered in gaming. What do I need the Xbox360 for in light of that? Halo 3? Please. I play FPS's on my PC with a mouse and keyboard. Come talk to me about shooters, and next gen, after you've played something like FEAR or Half Life 2. Hell, I've BEEN playing next gen for a while, at that rate. Also, anytime a competitor talks about Blu-ray they always point to the most expensive version. It is ALWAYS the $600.00 model - never the $500.00 one. Unlike Microsoft, the cheaper model doesn't actually suck with Sony.
You get the hard drive, you get Blu-ray, you get HD gaming, you get 1080p (component?), and you get HD video playback. So, that seems highly comparible to the $400.00 X-Box... with X-Box missing a single, very large, item. Don't get me wrong - X-Box 360 looks great. I have no doubt that Wii will be incredible as well. But, I want an all around next generation technology product. This is what PS3 gives me at a very reasonable price. As expected - a bit expensive for video gaming, very cheap for a HD disc player, and phenomenal for all around value. |

Same here, I have an HDtv, I want to plug a device into it that does it all ! PS3 is the only console that, out of the box, gives HD games and movies plus loads of other stuff, connectivity with PSP, etc.
It can't be compared penny for penny against any other console, the job Sony have though is to convince the public that going for PS3 is the right choice despite the extra cost. Mr Average won't be clued up as to the real differences between the 360 and the PS3. If I can store my music and photos/videos on PS3 and run them through my tv and amp - and be able to transfer all that content to my PSP, then I don't need to store it all on my PC, not something MS want to hear of course! It makes more sense to view my own photos and videos on a large family sized screen than a poky PC monitor. I intend to make full use of the PS3 60gig's additional features. |

Ever heard of scare tactics? Well, this is Scared tactics, and about as low as you can get. Mr Moore seems to fit right in with the MS company. Theyre both sneaky and low down always biting at better companies... You know, if someone wanted to name one of those snakes in the movie "Anaconda" you'd be hard pressed to find a better more fitting name than "Microsoft". If he wants to discuss high pricing maybe Mr Moore should talk about the price of The Windows Software which comes packed with more annoying bugs than the Amazon.
I think if anything Nintendo and Sony should team up along with all the Blu-ray supporters and go Snake hunting. In case you cant tell I have grown to dislike MS alot. Its their arrogant sneaky tactics. I still say give them actual competition in the Operating system industry and they will never last. Cause given a choice, I would never buy windows for my PC. I think alot of people feel that way. But unfortunatley we have no choice if we want a PC. |
