The cheapest players do not (HD-A2, A3), but the rest do.

you=wrong

But not all HD DVD players support 1080p, some are 1080i max. Probably for poeple with outh the 1080p tvs, makes the price way lower.

But, not complete. Let's see anyone do 1080p/24 with PiP on HD DVD.

It's trivial for BD because of the spec. It's next to impossible for HD DVD.

You are incorrect Toshiba has the firmware update to put into the current XA2 to enable 1080P/24 not to many displays available yet to really take advantage of this so why update the players with this firmware yet.

Hello TRoll. YOU ARE WRONG. HD-DUD cannot do 1080p/24. Try again!

I think the HD-A20 and HD-XA2 output 1080p. They'll also be getting a firmware update next month to support 24p, according to Toshiba. I think the Onkyo will do 1080p and 24p when it's released too if I remember correctly.

Edit: Just checked and yes, they're getting a firmware update next month for 24p. The new HD-A30 and A35 coming out in September/October will also do 1080p and output 24p as well.

What HD-DVD doesn't have is the storage capacity nor will they. Blu Ray is technically superior and its sad to see misinformation and the misinformed stating anything otherwise. Paramount made their move based soley on greed, good bad or indifferent, these are the facts. And because of this short term thinking viewpoint, they will suffer in the long run as so many other companies with short term gains and long term loses have done.

Yeah, Blu-ray does offer the better storage no doubt. I don't know if HD DVD is going to come out with the triple layer 51GB discs, but I haven't heard anything about it since it was mentioned last January.

You may want to check that big guy

Toshiba Announces 24p Output

Coming in early September, Toshiba will add an enhanced performance function to its HD-XA2 and HD-A20 HD DVD players by offering the capability for users to update the firmware of their players allowing playback of film content in 1080p/24 frames per second, or 24p. Movie films are traditionally captured at 24 frames per second and Toshiba's HD DVD players will be able to maintain this frame rate allowing consumers to enjoy movies in their native form

Alas they can also use the internet for updates via the ethernet port only the current gameconsole for the BR camp can do this. Oh and the new to come Denon 2000.00 dollar machine supposedly. They also aren't even standardized yet and the only one that is going to be 1.1 compliant is the new Denon.

Actually, doesn't the Pioneer have an internet connection also? As for the HD-DVD, it's like half and half as far as 1080p output. And there's only one player that does 7.1 sound and it's not on the market yet. Do you have any responses to that?

Actually, my Samsung BD-P1200 does this beautifully. Also 1080p/24 and upscales SD DVD's as well as the XA2.

I think the Toshiba HD-A35 that is coming in October will do all that -- 1080p/24, PiP, 7.1 bitstream via HDMI, update through ethernet port of CD.

Doesn't the BDA only mandate that NEW players announced after October 31 must be profile 1.1? As far as I know this does not affect current models at all. They are only profile 1.0 but can still be sold for as long as the manufacturer wishes? I hope the PS3 is upgradable, don't see why not, but Sony still has not confirmed it yet, which is making me nervous because I expected some sort of statement from them by now.
