Look I'm a big Blu-ray backer so I know to some this would sound like "way out their fanboy speak" but....
Para/DW while they were releasing on BD none of their titles had PCM/Lossless audio tracks(the main reason BD is better in my eyes since BD has over 56% and HDDVD has less 15%). So the upside I'm referring to is by the time they start releasing again on BD it will be completely apparent to them that they must release everything in PCM or Lossless. I know blades of Glory was to have PCM but even the HDDVD version only ended up with DD+. |

Yes, and another attempt to indicate the loss wasn't great. Losing Paramount was enormous, nothing else needs to be stated. It means neither side can win this idiotic format war until something else drastic happens and the fact that Paramount didn't utilize lossless audio isn't significant at all.

Also from the previous post I was unaware they stated Sept to start lossless, guess we'll have to wait and see. |

My years of marketing tell me one thing:
Blu-ray temporarily losing Paramount/Dreamworks Animation is _not_, and I repeat _not_, a big deal at all. The market is still so small it means nothing. If HDDVD had snagged three major studios all at the same time, that could send a message. But, even in that scenario it wouldn't matter as long as manufacturers were all still only making Blu-ray (which they are). This early on the real fight is about manufacturing and who can get the greatest selection of players to market. The studios will follow manufacturers. Currently, Blu-ray has every single major manufacturer onboard except one; Toshiba. HDDVD has only Toshiba. It's as simple as that. Toshiba can never outspend every other major manufacturer in the world combined for promotions and marketing or make enough players to even come close on shelf space. Their future 'cheap' player from Venturer is pointless. Why? Because Venturer makes that player so cheap by _not_ promoting or marketing it (and using garbage parts too). Without additional marketing support, HDDVD has nothing but more FUD and misinformation campaigns which will only bury them deeper when consumers do see the truth as every major manufacturer starts lining shelves at CE retailers with Blu-ray players this holiday season. |

I understand the factors in favor of Blu-ray. The problem is that with two exclusive major studios, several exclusive small studios and several consumer electronics companies offering HD DVD players, HD DVD will remain in the game. We needed the momentum of retailers not carrying HD DVD to continue, and it won't now. HD DVD will remain for another 18 months at a minimum and since there is no rule that poor sales means you have to quit, there is no reason to believe that HD DVD won't continue on longer than that. Blu-ray sales have been pathetic and no software from Paramount is one more reason that will continue. Inception to date, software sales breaks down about 60%-40% in favor of Blu-ray and that is not a decisive victory. With exclusive Paramount titles released on HD DVD, that ratio or something similar will be commonplace now.
The Paramount move was huge, you can spin it however you want and that won't change the fact. I see the Blu-ray goal as a knockout victory and disappearance of HD DVD, and this was a major setback. You are kidding yourself to state otherwise. Chris Last edited by Chris Gerhard; 09-04-2007 at 04:55 PM. |
