Read the article and it sounds great. What I dont understand is what are you going to be able to record?

OTA?
Satellite?
Cable?

This is whats not really stated.

To hell with the ATSC... while it would be nice, I would be happy with a simple HDMI input so I could record out of the Satellite tuner

It doesn't work that way. HDMI is raw video. 1920x1080/60i is about 1.5Gbps (~187MBps)

A 500GB drive would hold about 45 minutes of video (w/ no audio).

The compressing power needed for real-time compression would be that which Sony uses to create MPEG-2 ($$$$$). And nothing can do it for AVC or VC-1.

The only thing you can do reasonably is what all DVR do, which is record the compressed encoded stream for later decoding. To get that from a satellite or cableco box requires Firewire, which is the DTV standard for moving encoded material.

The US version will need at least one ATSC tuner for OTA recording and two CableCard slots. Sony needs to get this out of the market fast.
