Default Box-office Showdown (4/22-4/24) Bad Guys, Northman & UWOMT

Three new wide openings this weekend include DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s original villain movie The Bad Guys, Robert Eggers’ violent $70M Viking epic The Northman, and Lionsgate’s Nicolas Cage satire The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.

Deadline is projecting Bad Guys getting the top spot with $15m.

Which do you think will be the #1 movie at the box-office this weekend?

Bad Guys. There hasn't been a kid-friendly animated movie released since mid-DECEMBER. I know that Sonic 2 benefitted from that deprived audience, but it came out two weeks ago, and was very front-loaded. And Bad Guys will have the CGI animated movie market to itself until Minions 2...two months from now.

The Bad Guys: $17M
Sonic 2: $15M
Fantastic Beasts: $12M
The Northman: $10M
Unbearable Weight: $6M

However I don't think Sonic retaking #1 is out of the question.

Just imagine if Pixar had had a movie ready for release this Spring. Oh, wait!

Still mind-blowing that the estimate for The Bad Guys is this low. This feels like a situation where the movie could really surprise people.

Seems sadly another dead 2 weeks until theaters are saved again by Superheroes. The movies everyone claim to hate now. But go to see and only those.

Again, the family movie audience has been SEVERELY underserved since Covid, and with so much of the populace vaccinated and boosted by now, the time is ripe for a CGI cartoon to make major bank. Bad Guys should easily clear $100 million in the U.S. alone, and Minions 2 will do double that two months from now in the midst of summer vacation. The Nic Cage movie will only appeal to hardcore Cage fans, and Northman will be too bloody/A24-y to appeal to a mainstream audience (although the advertising means it'll have a decent opening weekend before word of mouth gets out).

Good luck with that happening sadly. People have showed they don't want to see R rated movies geared towards adults. Especially something to bleak and depressing it seems from reviews.

Is the story of Hamlet really depressing? I find it cathartic.

The Bad Guys looked so awful from the trailer. Like some cheap DTV animated movie. Am surprised reviews are great. I think it should open around 15-17 this weekend but be leggy due to no kids movies until the middle of June. Should have opened President's weekend and not so soon after Sonic. At least it had its trailer with that though.

The Northman will probably be #1 with over 20 Million.

Unbearable Weight could be anywhere from 4-7 Million. Not too smart releasing another well-reviewed adult skewing movie this weekend even if they are different genres. Will obviously be overshadowed by The Northman.

It's a bit on the bleak side but I wouldn't call it depressing

I’ve gone with Nic Cage for the upset, the trailer seems to play well in front of films. But obviously I don’t know how marketing is over stateside, so I imagine The Bad Guys has been tanning kids TV with ads.

The Northman is gonna struggle I think, probably even coming under estimates.
