So some may remember back in March of 2006 I had a surgery. Well, that was a terrible experience and pretty much the first time I ever had any medical related problem in my life save a stitch or two here and there as a kid.
Well, if you didn't know, or forgot I had a condition called a "Fistul Abcess" Yes, this happened in like the one place you don't want to have ANY problems. This is the Medical Explaination of what I was left with after the Abcess, it's call a "Fistula": A fistula is an abnormal connection between the inside of the anal canal and the skin around the anus. A fistula usually arises as a consequence of an infection of one of the glands that are located within the anal canal. Bacteria that are normally present in the anal glands begin to multiply and form an abscess that burrows through the wall of the rectum and to the skin surrounding the anus. Some abscesses will rupture or break open spontaneously (Mine did-wow did it hurt!). Others will require surgical drainage. A fistula develops when the tract that extends between the inside gland and the outside opening does not heal. Symptoms of anal fistulas include pain, bleeding, recurrent infections, soiling with pus or blood. ![]() The diagram above shows where the Abcess is located (very common) and then on the left shows what is left behind after it evacuates. So after several Mis-Diagnosis, everything from "Hemrhoids" to "Fissure" I finally get a referal to a Surgeon to see just what the heck is going on. He knew immediately what it was, had apparently done hundreds of them (this is more common than I could have imagined) and set me up for Surgery. I went in and had a "Fistulectomy" which is the Removal of this abnormal passage left behind from the original Abcess. See you have to have surgery because it will never heal otherwise, your body created this mess, so it thinks it's normal...this is just one of many flaws in the human being, heck even woman can get these from child birth in another area... The surgery went pretty smooth and I just had to take it easy for several weeks. I thought I was good to go, but then week after week things always felt weird, the Doc kept saying I was good and that was that. Well, many months went by and taking the advice of my girl I went back. (Almost 1 1/2 years of dealing with continuous pain,bi-weekly drainage etc.) Well sure enough it's Back. Truth is...it never was gone. See here's the thing with this, When they remove it, there is no stitching you up. A wound is left behind that has to heal from the inside out. Originally when they told me this, I thought, has to heal from inside of me, out. Well doing research (I had assumed incorrectly originally). For example, think of it as a pipline...now take the roof off the pipeline...what are you left with? A trench right...well now the floor of that trench has to rise to the top eventually becoming level with the surrounding skin. Well, if it closes up together, it traps the infection inside and the Pipeline or "Fistula" remains. The difficult part though is...how do you keep it from healing incorrectly? Luck, really i supposse, because how could anyone but the most flexible Yoga master ever be able to see in that area...and the pain is unbareable...so even asking for help from someone is not only akward...embaressing but hard for even them to really do anything, you just can't see in there without like a colonoscopy. 4 weeks ago I went back to the Dr. He says...oh yeah, sure enough I see the opening. he puts a catheder in the fistula and explains that it possibly healed half way and half is still a fistula. He says to me if it is just the outer part, and the Catheder stops half way then we are in business and I can do the procedure here in the office (Called a Fistulotomy) which is Laying open the Fistula rather than removal of (Fistulectomy). He als said, However if it goes all the way through we have to re-do this at the hospital and put you under (like last time). The pain was too much to take, so he gave me a local to check how far the rabbit hole went. Seemingly it didn't connect through, so he proceeded and laid it open. Well I thought everything was good. I felt the best I had in like a year! I kept the wound open like he said to, to keep it from healing incorrectly and all, but about 3 weeks in I got a bump and it burst. And it didn't come out the wound, the seepage came out from the inside. This confirmed it is still connected on the inside. (Fill in the blanks here with emotions of, Frustrations, depression etc.) ![]() So this is the Dilemna I am faced with. It's a major nuisance that has plagued my life for over a year now. It has caused financial problems for me, I've gained weight because of it, my performance at work has suffered, my relationship with my family & friends has suffered because I never can do anything without planning my whole day/life around Bowel movements and the consequences of the day after it. It causes fever like symptoms, Fatigue...depression etc. I am posting up this blog because hopefully my friends who read this are mature enough to read this and be understanding of whats going on, etc. (those who think it's gross or a joke, All i can say is I hope it never happens to you). Like I said, this is more common than you think, I already know two friends who have had it. It hits mostly in males, 30-40 and woman can get it too! So people, if you ever get something irritating in that area, know that A) you aren't alone, and B) You got a friend that can walk you through it, I'm like an expert on the subject now...lol Those who are wondering where I am for the next day or so I'll be recovering from what I hope to be a successful surgery this time. Hopefully the experiences of past will help me in getting in right this time and a more speedy/painless recovery. lets keep our fingers crossed that my Bumm problems are "Behind me" after this! ![]() Staying Optimistic! after all, 3rd times a charm right? ![]() I'll post back when I can!
