hi folks,
been offered a 60gb first gen ps3 for a decent price.. would it be a bad buy? i had one originally but sold on to get second gen/slim etc.. but recently sold the slim to raise some cash.. now i could buy again i'm wondering about the drawbacks of a first gen ps3.. i know it wont bitstream hd codecs.. but i have my oppo bd 83 for that, it might be louder in operation than the slim.. and use more power.. but i like the idea of being able to use the card readers.. and i like the media abilities of the ps3 for music/photos... will the older ps3s be fully compatible with the Move controllers? it is from a shop so would have 12 months warranty.. Cheers, Mick. |

I think you need a PS Eye for Move to work on your PS3, and the PS Eye works on both the old and slim PS3s.

Another thing you may want to consider is if you get the Move with an original PS3, there are USB ports in the back to where you can hook the camera too. With the PS3 Slim you would be forced to have the camera hooked to the front. Basically what Im saying is if you want to keep the camera hooked up 24/7 it would look a lot cleaner on the older system. With the Slim you would always have a USB cable sticking out of the front. Probably not that big of a deal though.

I agree with this. You don't know how the PS3 was treated so it'd be best to just get a new one. What's the "decent" price that you're getting it for? I know that you would hate to spend $150 or $200 on it and it gets the YLoD within a month or two or even 6. Personally I would just spend a little extra money and get the Slim.

well it would come with a 12 month warranty as its being bought in a shop.. so if it failed.. i could get it fixed/replaced.. its about 100 dollars less than a new slim.. i know the slim would come with bigger hard disk etc.. its just the 6gbs dont come up that often..

I purchased mine new for $599 in Dec. 2006. Never had a problem. I use it for both games and movies. |

I bought a second one not too long ago. Thought about the new model for power reasons, but I like the true backup to my first gen 60GB model.

Only disadvantages is that the 60gig can be noisy...mine is very noisy and I can hear the fan from across the room during movies. It also uses more power than the new one.
Advantages: 4 USB Ports, Backwards Compatible with PS2 games If it's a decent price for a used system, I'd grab it up. |
