When the sound cuts out on my Sony AV receiver using DD5.1 (bitstream), does this mean it cannot handle the bandwidth or what?
It will almost always do it during an action scene, and sometimes at random. When I change it over to Linear PCM it works fine, but my receiver (on autodetect) changes over to stereo and takes away the DD light, so I lose my 5.1 surround. I am using a PS3 with optical to a Sony 6.1 receiver (it does not support HDMI). I am getting a new receiver this year (probably the new Sony when its released), but I would like to get the best sound I can for now; can anybody help me figure out a fix for now? Thanks! |

I've had it for awhile, but its always done everything I needed (until everything turned HDMI). Yeah I believe the PS3 does the decoding in Linear PCM mode, but I am not sure how it is supposed to work using optical, it changes to 2ch and does not sound as good. |

I found this. Looks like there are a bunch of people with the problem and the consensus is that the receiver is at fault.
Sony's unknowledge base had this to say "This Audio/Video (A/V) receiver was manufactured prior to the introduction of Blu-ray Disc® (BD) technology. The digital (optical and coaxial) connection does not support the Dolby® Digital signal from a BD movie; this symptom is not a malfunction. Alternatively, an analog connection should be used to connect your BD player to the A/V receiver in order to hear the sound. NOTE: There are no plans at this time to update the A/V receiver to support the Dolby Digital signal from BD movies. " Link Sorry mate! |

Thanks for the link.
I think I was avoiding that search because of news like this. Looks like I will be upping the purchase date of that new receiver... I had the same problem (but not as bad) when I got a Sony DirecTV SAT receiver (years back), movies with DD would cut out, I thought it was the D* SAT receiver and swapped it out (didnt help), then when I went to Tivo HR10-250's I no longer had the problem. I do not have the problem with my HR20's, 360, or Sony DVD changer either, just the PS3 ![]() ![]() At least I got my money’s worth out of this receiver, I've had it since it was released and went through 2 of the universal remotes before getting a logitech 890, maybe somebody else I know can use it. Thanks |
