Default How oblivious are people about Blu-ray?

I had conversations with people about movies, since im a movie buff. And when they ask me about what movies i have, when i mention Blu-ray, they are like HUH! So isnt it funny to explain it because its not being advertised as much as you'd think.

How do u explain it to people and how many times have u explained it?

I understand this,

I guess it´s because people don´t really care much about movie technologie etc.

i´ve read an article about some HD mediums, and they say about 30%
( i don´t know the exactly number )
of the PS3 / 360 owners don´t know what they can do with it... except playing

The market isn´t ready enough to detach DVD...

we are the early adopters... and we will win this fight

Some people I know are like "Better than DVD?" when I tell them what Blu-ray is

Blu-ray needs heavy in-store flooding

Yeah most people buy an HDTV without really caring about getting a HD signal. And the few people who do care, think that the only place to get it is from the cable or satellite company, those 10 channels that they offer.

I also hear a lot of people think that by Feb 2009 everything will be in HD.

I know exactly what you're talking about. It doesn't make any sense why people would buy HDTV displays when they don't plan on getting any HD sources for it! They think it'll be already HD once they set it up.

That kind of thinking among the majority of consumers is pretty warped.

as is my usual argument when you go to most bestbuys, targets exc. they have almost all there hd sets hooked up with coax cables, red yellow white, and usually if they are hooked up right they dont have quality hd programing so for most people its like um my tv looks just like that Im gonna spend over 1,000 or 2 for that.... and until more people get to see the light like us it might be awhile... granted they can get way better deals on decent to good sets that a few years ago most people dropped 5000 for.

This is just people misunderstanding that the mandate is to switch to digital, not necessary HD.

The problem is, unless you're always looking for better, it's unlikely that you're going to care about HDM at this point.

The mass market is price concious to the extreme, and HDM (either format) aren't oriented toward that. And probably never will be.

The only hope for mass adoption (and the implied boost of the price entry point) is to evolve HDM toward features that compell people to look into it.

One player maker, Toshiba, doesn't help. No matter how cheap the player is. Because it doesn't present an image of a well supported format. There is only so much shelf space on maker can take up and promote.

Beyond Sony, who has obvious reasons to promote, we have Fox especially Disney doing things to promote the format, and not just their movies. Warner is (currently) doing this for both formats. And Universal and Paramount haven't done much of anything promotion wise.

I think Q4 will see a mass of CE and studio (and maybe PC) promotion for Blu-ray that will be awesome. Toshiba/Universal/Paramount simply can't compete with that at so many levels.

It is funny, but then again it isn't.
Blu-ray is not yet a common enough name that people know what it is. I find that more people have heard the name recently with the latest ads, but HD-DVD and Blu-ray confuse them, and that is sad.
I wish there was some way to better educate the populous and let them make the choice.
It is we, the early adopters of the next-gen format, that will pave the way for the future of in-home movie technology.

I wish that the HD-DVD camp didn't purposely spread FUD about Blu-ray cause it will make people upset if they make a choice based on bad information and will alienate people from both formats.

I am often correcting people still about the FACT that all Blu-ray players play DVDs, and that all PS3 can pay Blu-ray built-in.

I am convinced that most people bought DVD players so they would have a device that would not blink the "12:00" error message all the time.

I know a few people like this.
The look on their faces when I drag this laptop and HDMI cable over to their house and playback a BD on their HDTV... Priceless!

Its just very funny of how many people dont know what it is, they have the look on their face like "Theres a NEW Mexico?". Its like there is something better than DVD (Bluray) and something worse (HD DUD)

people may be oblivious to HDTV and HDM, so, we need to educuate. i'm always showing people that come over to the house, the ps3 and the BD's. the usual reaction "damn that sharp," or "oh my look at the clarity."

Ya some people still think DVD is awesome. I guess it depends what kind of TV you have. But damn a DVD resolution is horrible.

We all thought it was great because it matched broadcast TV resolution but was MUCH cleaner. VHS was only 240 lines of resolution, yet we all thought the picture was good!

Blu-ray is spreading rather rapidly by word of mouth. Sure you see new releases announced on TV for DVD and blu-ray. People hear that and go, "Huh? What is blu-ray?" A quick trip to the web and they know twice as much as they did. Or they ask around.

Don't worry, this Christmas blu-ray will be at the top of the electronics sales charts.

Reminds me of when widescreen started appearing. I'd tell people to get the widescreen instead of the full frame. The reply 90% of the time was... "How can you stand those black bars?" I would reply, "How can you stand missing up to 46% of the picture? It really takes the lay people out there a while to finally catch on.

well people are pretty oblivious, I had a Best Buy Employee tell me that the PS3 could play both formats HD-DVD, and Blu-Ray. I didn't even waste my time arguing with him. There was no point. I just said, "oh, that's nice"

I do get blank looks from people when I mention the word Blu-Ray. Somebody asked me if it was some kind of new drug.
