Default Close Encounters of the Third Kind

is it just me or do you think that this is another mucho importante BD release? it's spielberg's investment of faith in Blu-Ray. in my opinion, we have to show him some love by purchasing this title when it comes out - gotta let him know that the water's safe over here to encourage him to put pressure on Universal to hold his releases til they go neutral. anyone else tracking? agree? disagree?

plus...this disc, with steven's attention all over it, is assured to be quality.

p.s. i hate the inability to edit poll posts. i omitted to give a third option of undecided.

This is one of those WOW titles of my youth. The magic summer of '77. And it is one of my favorite films of all time with one of my favorite actors (Richard Dreyfuss).

I will absolutely be buying this.

And that this was specifically approved, and even a special introduction shot for the BD release by the man himself, is very significant. Especially since the announcement came about a week after Graffeo was telling an audience not to expect Spielberg titles in HD until better penetration was reached.

I voted yes, but I wish the question about the booklet would be answered (i.e., is the booklet that comes with the DVD version also included with the Blu version?)

Would it affect your decision to buy it on Blu-ray?

Not very likely, but I'd be aggrieved nonetheless. If they're including it with the DVD release, it only seems fair to include it with the Blu-ray release, especially given that the latter will probably be more expensive than the former.

I agree. And I'm not sure why it specifically wouldn't be included, except perhaps it contains DVD-specific comments.

How about this for the cover of the one in the DVD?: "You could have been watching this in HD" with a Blu-ray logo underneath.

Thumbs up

I'll be reviewing it.

It seems a bit dated by today's standards, but it's a powerful film with a stronger human element than most sci-fi/alien movies.

I saw it in the theaters when it first opened and I have the latest DVD version, but can't wait to see the blu-ray.

In the Insiders thread, paidgeek confirmed that the Blu-ray edition of CE3K will definately include the booklet. :-)

I couldn't agree more. The fact that Roy Neary gave up everything including his family was a powerful story about a man who became obsessed with knowing the truth of what was beyond our world. This can be paralled with the space program today, and our thirst for knowing what else lies within our own universe. Speilberg is a great director and story teller. I was probably 4 or 5 when this came out, and I've grown up with this movie. This is one of my favorite movies of all time and I cannot wait to get this in November. Wouldn't it be great if the booklet was actually an interactive one on the second disc with the extras?

I'm much more inclined to spend $50 on this than Spiderman 3. Still too damn much especially when you consider amazon is selling the 5 disc Blade Runner for $28.

I think ratatouille comes out on the same day along with Cars and those other Pixar films, I think I'm doomed.

Most of Speilberg's movies seem pretty dated to me now i.e. I can't watch ET, Jaws and most of his films. Close Encounters is OK, but I WILL be buying, if nothing else to support BLU-RAY!

Yeah, computers and digital postproduction really changed filmmaking. Spielberg's films before 1990 tend to look dated because that was before digital tools came along. He also tried to reach out to children and make his films accessible to younger audiences, so that's why Jurassic Park and ET are dumbed down. But Saving Private Ryan, Amistad and Schindler's List are three of my favorites, and they are not dated at all.

Jaws and Close Encounters are incredible, given the tools Spielberg had to work with. For example, when Richard Dreyfus' character is parked in the street at night, he's waving cars to go around him as he looks at his map, one of the "cars" doesn't go around him. The headlights go up and over him. You have to realize that to audiences at that time, these special effects were magical. We had never seen things like that before. Sure, by today's standards, these effects look cheap and silly, but at the time, it was groundbreaking stuff and it seemed like real UFOs.

Agreed. I was quite impressed when I saw this movie as a kid. I remember wishing that there were more actual Sci-fi shots, but the story was really captivating and the acting especially of RD was great. That 5 note melody was one of the first things I played on the piano
