Default LG BH200 region free question - supports 1080i/50?

Is the LGBH200 region free player one of the ones which can support 1080i/50 of region B discs, and convert them to the proper playback?

Is there a way to program my NB500MGXA Magnavox to be region-free?

It can support playback of 1080/50i discs but you will need a 50hz capable TV to watch 50hz discs with it. It cannot convert them to another refresh rate (eg. 60hz) on playback.

edit 29/12/2011 - I think what I said above is wrong - another member has said this player is capable of playing back 50hz discs at 60hz - see my next post.

How come it says it does on that list. I just made an offer on one on Kijiji!

I think I posted that before I updated the list because of a member's post (so I think my post above was wrong):

I tested this out on the UK Blu-ray of The Three Burials of Melquidas Estrada which is 1080i/50 and the Bh200 played it at 1080p/60; the Bh100 could not.
Though also see this post from The Duke (who says on his Panasonic projector it says it is receiving 50hz):

Thank you...I guess if I can get it for $20 I'll try it and see what happens and report back to confirm.

I wouldn't pay much more than 20 for it. I had one and the laser died in a short amount of time.

Yeah I'm keeping my eye open for the Sammy BD-P1500/1600 as well.

I got rid of my BH200 about this time last year, but I still don't think it can convert 50Hz material to 60Mz. My old CRT rear projection HDTV couldn't accept 50Hz input and I had the BH200 set to output 60Hz. I remember now with the very first German Region B Dances with Wolves I'd always get a blank screen and only after several hits on the chapter skip button I'd finally get the main menu, and then the movie played fine. When I got my Panasonic projector that can accept 50Hz I realized that it was pausing on a licensing screen in German & in 50Hz PAL that you had to hit Enter to agree to it, so the player wasn't able to convert that to 60Hz.

I think they're pretty good players for all they can do. But they're getting pretty old now, 4-5 years old, and parts are impossible to find, your best bet it to buy one stuck on "Please Wait" on eBay for a spare drive, etc. I got rid of mine because of that, and they were bringing a really good price on Amazon Marketplace. I got around $260 for mine and that paid for 2/3rds of my Oppo. For 20 bucks you don't have much to lose.

I'd keep an eye out for a Sammy BD-P2500/2550 instead. They have the Reon processor and are top notch for DVD upconversion, and very solid, stable Blu-ray playback, I've never had any BD playback issues. The 2550 is the same as the 2500 only it adds Pandora playback and was a Best Buy (I think it was them) exclusive. As one of the first players that supported streaming playback for Netflix, etc., it's pretty buggy for that and people get fed up & sell them cheap. I've had the 2500 in my rack for 3+ years, and have a 2550 in the closet for backup that I got for $40.

It will ONLY be used for the F1 2011 season review, so I don't really care about any other features!

My PS3 and Pioneer Elite DV-48 handle all other Blu-ray, DVD, SACD, CD and DVD-A duties.

I've changed its description in the 50hz players thread. I'm not sure if it can or can't output 50Hz titles at 60Hz or just 50hz - I wonder if mercurythewise (who said it could output at 60hz) had a different firmware version or something different (like using a different output)?. Is it worth contacting LG?

Good score!

Yeah, forgot to mention the Sanny BD-P2500/2550 can bitstream, and for those with older receivers it can internally decode TrueHD & DTS-HD HR/MA and output them via 5.1 channel analog. Great deal at these prices, just don't depend on it for Netflix etc. streaming, very buggy at that.
