As of right now, the PS3 cannot bitstream TrueHD. It will package it into PCM and send it to your reciever/TV. I am hoping with all of the new Blu-Ray players that are being released with the ability to bitstream TrueHD, the PS3 group will send out an update to the PS3 that can directly bitstream TrueHD also.

If you hit the display button on your PS3 remote, you can see what audio track you are listening to. It also shows the bit rate of the different audio tracks. I have listed to both the DDTHD and LPCM tracks of 300 and could not tell a difference, so I default to the LPCM because of it's higher rate.

No , if your receiver supports DDTHD and you are using an HDMI cable, you are getting the DDTHD audio track. The display on your receiver might not say DDTHD, but if you hit display on the PS3 remote, it will say "Dolby True HD" on the top left of your TV screen.

OK, if your receiver doesn't have a Dolby True HD logo on it, you won't get it. LPCM is better anyways.

Yes PCM is indeed amazing, but when, IF, PS3 will be able to output TrueHD, then i dont need a receiver with Version 1.3? My PS3 will do all the work right.

Sorry, but you will still need HDMI 1.3 for your receiver to "understand" it.

Alright, it doesn't bitstream TrueHD, but if you set your audio output to PCM, it will decode the TrueHD on PS3 and send it to the reciever as PCM which is the exact same thing. So you're still getting TrueHD, it's just your reciever reads it as PCM. You'll notice some large bitrate differences though. To check if it's actually decoding it once you've set your audio output on the PS3 to PCM, just hit display and it'll say "Dolby TrueHD". To set the PS3 to PCM, hit the triangle during playback, go to A/V Options (or whatever it's called) and go to the bottom thing which is the Audio Output. Right now it's probably set to bitstream, change it to PCM and you should be golden.

Yeah that's not true at all. If the player decodes it, your reciever just recieves the PCM signal which is the same exact thing. It's just the player decoded it instead of the reciever.

For HDMI:

If you have it set to TrueHD and "bitstream" then it will read "Dolby Digital 640 Kbps"

If you have it set to TrueHD and "PCM" then it should display TrueHD.

Currently the PS3 decodes TrueHD and outputs it as PCM. So on the upcoming Spider-man 3 there will be two audio tracks, 16/48 PCM and 24/48 TrueHD.

You want to have your HDMI audio setting to "PCM" and choose the TrueHD track. Any receiver that accepts audio across HDMI will accept PCM.

I wouldn't expect the PS3 to get the ability to output bitstream TrueHD or DTS-MA anytime soon as I believe that is a limitation of the current hardware.

The PS3 is using amazing processing power though so there really isn't any reason to want it to output TrueHD.

I thought Cobra was asking if he would could get TrueHD in its bitstream form- not packaged as PCM (which my earlier post pointed out). So, my post is quite true.

Exactly!
I have a Yamaha 861, it's the model up from the 661. My PS3 and avr are connected via HDMI and my PS3 is set to output audio through the HDMI interface as LPCM.
When you're playing a BD the Yammy should display MPCM ( multi-channel PCM ) as the input. As for the movie 300, I didn't hear a big difference between the PCM and the True HD soundtracks.

Do you think if I posted the rest of that stuff I'd need a wikipedia link to tell me how the bitstream audio works? He was just asking if he was able to take advantage of Dolby TrueHD, not if he could bitstream it out. He even mentioned if his PS3 does all the work, he wont need an HDMI 1.3 reciever.

The BD players that I have experience with will convert or downmix according to the audio settings chosen. A good example is with the BDP-S1 my Pop has. When I upgraded the firmware to 2.00 which supported the TrueHD decode, the default settings sent just Dolby Digital to his Onkyo. I changed the settings to match this update provided on the Sony Support site so the TrueHD would be decoded inside the S1 and outputted as PCM to the receiver.

How does this relate to the PS3? My belief is that it is very similar in how it should be set up. Let the PS3 do the decode and conversion to PCM and like what was mentioned in an earlier post, use the display button to show what the PS3 is actually doing. I own a Pioneer VSX-84TXsi and all I ever see from my PS3, and my standalone is PCM when doing Dolby-anything.

Well, I am not going to get in a pissing match with you over this, so I will reiterate what I explained before and leave it at that. I thought he was asking about TrueHD via bitstream and that is why I answered that you need HDMI 1.3. So I must yield to you good sir, and your obvious superior geekdom.

lol Geekdom. I like it. Well I wasn't trying to urinate on you, it's just there's a lot of myths out there as far as what you need for these new sound formats and I thought your post was one of the ones that would fuel the myths.
