Default Sony BDP-S550 loading issue

Has anyone here had any trouble getting Starship Troopers BD to load and play? I have tried 2 different new Starship Troopers Blu-Ray DVDs and neither will load. I read somewhere where you have to have the 550 connected to the internet for it to load because The DVD is BD live. Does not make any sense.

I have the S350 which is basically the same player minus some features, and I have watched Starship Troopers several times without any issues. My player is not even connected to the internet. If I were you, I would exchange the player if you still can......I don't think is a BD live issue......

I've heard those movies are having problems on several machines. I have Phillips and Samsung,.....and could get neither to load. Hoping for a firmware update soon.

Well I got Starship Troopers BD to load and play. I had to connect the S550 to the internet and install the memory card. This BD Live BD needs the internet.

I don't know why you had to do that because I have the S350 NOT connected to the internet and no memory card attached to it, and I have played the movie several times without any issues....

Yea that is what you said before. Your 350 is not a 550, and you need to read the other reviews from 550 owners here and other threads before you tell someone to return their player. Others have had the same problem.

The S350 and the S550 are virtually the same machine. The only differences are the S550 has the 5.1 analog outputs and it internally decodes DTS Master HD...... The S350 does not. Everything else is identical.....

I just want to help.....not to make you mad......

The BDP-s550 is junk, I had one for 29 days, returned it, the Panasonic BD55 is much more reliable, plus, they actually issue regular firmware updates to solve problems like this. Sorry for all the BDP-550 owners.

The BD55 is junk, I had one for 2 weeks, returned it, the Sony S550 is much more reliable, no firmware updates, because the player doesn't need one. Sorry for all the BD55 owners.

Not to sound flippant, but does anyone ever read any of the documentation that comes with a product? The requirement that the (Sony-supplied) external memory be inserted into the player's EXT slot and that the player be connected to the internet is clearly and repeatedly stated in the Operating Instructions (p35) and a pink supplemental info sheet, both of which are packaged in a translucent yellow bag with the warranty policy.

"To enjoy the BD-Live function
Inserting the external memory into the player's EXT slot and connecting the player to the internet are necessary.
For optimal performance of BD-Live functions, we recommend using an internet connection with an effective speed of 1 Mbps or greater.
For details about inserting the external memory into the player's EXT slot and connecting the player to the network, refer to the supplied Operating Instructions".

Yes, it IS a BD-Live issue. See my quote of the Sony info above.

Did you try accessing the BD-Live features? Playing a movie and accessing BD-Live features are two separate activities. The former does not require the installation of the external memory and an internet connection, while the latter does.

Actually, the BDP-S550 has 7.1 analog outputs, not 5.1 analog outputs. If you want to help, thats' great. However, please be sure what you are typing is accurate info. Repeatedly posting uninformed, inaccurate responses is the opposite of helpful - it IS annoying.

Actually, I think everyone is a little confused. The OP said that the disc would not load and play. We don't yet know if he is just trying to watch the movie or access the BD-Live features. If he is just trying to watch the movie without having an internet connection he will experience LONG load times because the disc is initially looking for and trying to establish an internet connection. However, eventually, the movie should load. Now if the OP is trying to access the BD-Live features then yes indeed, he must have an internet connection and the external memory installed.

StarshipTroopers BD will not load or play unless the Flash Drive is installed. I have played many other BD Live movies and they played fine without the Flash Drive but this one would not. I installed the internet and loaded the Flash Drive, and now the movie will load and play without the internet but you still need the Flash Drive installed to load and play Starship Troopers BD.

I understand your confusion, but the full spec of BD-Live is to have memory there, with the 550 this is done with the flash drive. I think some titles use the flash drive even without the internet connected. This is not a Sony flaw if you are looking at it like this: Profile 2.0 needs extra memory, if it isn't there, some things could not work right. This is what you experienced without it and I think other brands/players will have this exact same problem.

I'm not confused, that particular BD (Starship Troopers) is the only BD that I have come across that needs the Flash Drive to load and play. Never said it was a Sony flaw. I have played many other BDs with BD Live that did not need the Flash Drive to load and play. I'm not talking about accessing BD Live content, just loading and playing.

Yes, ok, but still, you were a bit agitated about it , I think that is not the right way to react if you consider that profile 2.0 players are supposed to have memory in it. This player is standard equipped with a profile 2.0 firmware so it expects memory, the 350 standard wasn't equipped with 2.0 so it can run without the drive I would assume. Even though you didn't encounter a single other BD with this "issue" it can be something that will happen more often.
BD's can need the space to run some data on it for certain abilities, that could be the reason why it acts like this. But it is nice to see that it only needed the flash drive.

I wish to buy this item from Amazon for the best price but with all the
conflicting reviews I want to purchase a Sony extended warrantee.

I called Sony and after several transfers I spoke with someone who said
that I can buy a Sony extended service contract directly from Sony regardless
of where I purchase it.

They gave me a telephone number to accomplish this:
1-866-766-9259 I did not call this number. This may be helpful to
someone so am passing it along.

I believe you are overreacting about what I said. I made a statement so other people will understand what needs to be done with a few of these BDs, and to remember to install the Flash Drive when setting up the player. Yes this player is standard with 2.0 firmware but it doesn't expect memory for all BD Live BDs to play, this is obvious in that the other BD Live BDs play without the Flash Drive. Do I have to spell it out or can you read between the lines.
