Question Vertical bar rolling horizontally

Hello all. I have a BDP-S300 and have noticed an odd on-screen 'activity'. When the BR player is on, and the screen is a solid dark color, there is a rolling vertical bar from left to right. It also shows up if a scene in a movie is primarly dark and solid. The TV is also Sony (WEGA) 36"; conected by Monster HDMI > DVI cable. AC to both units is coming through Monster Power 3600. In normal TV or PS2 mode it doesn't appear. Any ideas?

Red face Still there.

Thanks for the reading material! A serious body of great information in that thread. I tried all of the things in the thread that were applicable to my installation, unfortunatly without success. I even went to the point of removing all equipment from the MP3600 and using outlets from different circuits. It always is there. I must now wonder if the HDMI > DVI (the TV is an early HD unit) connection is at fault. I am going to try component connection to see if that will solve it. We weren't planning to replace the TV 'til next year.

The MP3600 has all manner of filters in it, each group of which is applicable to a particular group of components (digital, analog audio, video, high amp draw, etc.) The rolling vertical bar was one of the reasons I elected to go with it vs a simple surge protector. I also have a 'whole house' surge suppressor from my local power utility installed just on my side of the meter. It must do some good, as my neighbors have lost equipment to lightning, while so far I've been OK. We live on the top of a mountain; lots of lightning during the summer months.

If I get this solved, I'll repost with the so;ution.

i'm inclined to think you're right here. i've got a PC hooked up to my HDTV via DVI to HDMI connection and had some over/underscan issues setting it up to display correctly.

a computer resolution is different than an HDTV resolution, and is why they do not match up correctly.

computer resolution is whatever you want it to be. what i'm saying is there is some kind of overscan/underscan that i don't think DVI compensates for. JJ Michael may be having a similar issue as i did with my DVI.

overscan/underscan does not "create" a rolling vertical bar.

It's about 2" wide; more of a bar, actually. It is almost reminiscent of a scan bar on a radar scope.

some sony CRT's have a rolling line that is visible on all black or all white screens. it's usually a bout 2-4 lines of resolution thick and takes about 5 seconds per pass. It's like some sort of comb filter I was told, my old 20 & 27" Sony's did it.

exactly. the rolling bar isn't created by underscan, but that's where it should be: off-screen. the rolling bar is likely just part of the signal from the player (for whatever reason), but because DVI doesn't over/underscan properly it's now visible.

just saying his HDMI/DVI problem sounds very similar to the HDMI/DVI probem i had.
