I bought one of these for my computer and PS3. I'm tired of switching the eithernet cable back and forth from my computer. I wanted to use one of these instead of a wireless router.
http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=DES-1005E I can't seem to get both my compuer and PS3 to work at the same time with the Switch. The instructions that came with it are pretty weak on trouble shooting. What could I be doing wrong? Theres not much to it. My computer seem to be working fine with it, but my PS3 is not. |

I'm assuming that you currently only have a modem and that you've only got one ethernet cable coming from it, and that's the cable you use for your computer/PS3. Another simple solution is to get a hub, which is easier to set up and use than a switch. Performance-wise, you will not get the same as what you get with a switch, but it is easier. If you've already got the switch, though, just stick with that. You may need to get a crossover cable that goes from your modem (or whatever you've currently got as your main internet connection) to the switch. |

[QUOTE=brettallica;4469489]In a perfect world, this is how it should work. I think he's saying that it's not working like that, though. It might need to be like this:
1 (crossover) - from modem to switch For a modem to switch you will not need a crossover cable. If you are pair multiple switches then yes you would need a crossover cable. However for a simple config such as this. It's not needed Hub's will work but (if you can find them...) however configuring a hub or a switch are the same. The benefits of a switch FAR out weigh that of a hub. A hub will hinder your performance for online gaming since hubs are 1 giant collision domains and will cause traffic jams inside your hub. Causing lagging/stuttering performance Last edited by I_Like_Movies; 03-08-2011 at 07:21 PM. |

I also agree about the hub vs. switch thing you're talking about. That's why I use switches. I'm starting to think it's time to reset all devices in the mix. Anyone who knows computers knows that this fixes the issue more often than not. Am I right or am I right?! ![]() |

I think you're on to something Brett. I would hazard a guess that both the computer and the PS3 have already been assigned the same IP on them. So when one is on, the other will not work. A simple IP refresh or renew on the PS3 under network settings, should allow them to both work at the same time.
