1 (crossover) - from modem to switch For a modem to switch you will not need a crossover cable. If you are pair multiple switches then yes you would need a crossover cable. However for a simple config such as this. It's not needed Hub's will work but (if you can find them...) however configuring a hub or a switch are the same. The benefits of a switch FAR out weigh that of a hub. A hub will hinder your performance for online gaming since hubs are 1 giant collision domains and will cause traffic jams inside your hub.
