Default Canada's take on why PCM is so prevalent on Blu releases

There are a whole littany of reasons why PCM is so prevalent on Blu Ray releases.

1. PCM 5.1 is one of the best of the new encodeing forms for audio quality on Blu. Sorry, HD DVD you don't have enough space, when I think about it I'm not sorry, I'm glad .

2. Everbody with an HDMI receiver or 6 channel analog inputs on there BR player and receiver can decode it in 5.1 surround.

3. I have no idea if this is true or not but you probably don't have to pay anyone licencing fees to use it, since it has been used on CD's since the mid 80's. Plus I almost positive no one own's PCM.

I have a receiver with optical and 6 channel analog inputs. Are there PS3 cables that would allow me to use the analog inputs?

There are not 5.1 analog outs on the PS3... This is a big reason why some people have chosen to go with a BD standalone.

I'm reading that LPCM out over optical is 2-channel only.

DAMMIT! Maybe Sony or some third party will come up with something to rectify this. I really don't want to buy an HDMI receiver right now. Too broke.

I know Sony could come out with 6 channel analog cabels and I bet I am not the only one who would gladly lay down $ 50 for that. Some of you will say $ 50 for 6 analog cabels what a rip but that's so cheap if you figure a HDMI receiver is a minimum $ 300.

Maybe we should write Sony and suggest they market a $ 50 6 ch analog cable, I can guarantee them it would fly of sheves.

what receiver are you using? and do you use HDMI or just optical for audio?

Optical doent have the ability to support HDCP so it cannot provide use for any of the newer audio codecs...basically you can only get 5.1 (6.1 DD EX) ...

HDMI and multichannel Analog audio connections are the only ways to receive Uncompressed PCM, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HA MA

Um, without 6 DACs that actually have terminals on the back of the PS3, you can't just make a "cable" do that....

enjoy

I dont know that a Multichannel Analog connection would be possible for the PS3 without physical hardware changes...

but this is not my area of understanding so I may be wrong.

Well, remember that Sony is also trying to allow other CE manufacturers to sell their players. Remember how long it took them to enable 24p output? They were making sure other players could do it too, so they won't destroy the player market.

Maybe I'm wrong, there are actually 4 more channels coming out on that "AV-multi" (or whatever it's called) quietly waiting for a firmare update to enable them....

ok, probably not

What if you decided to use the Digital Audio Optical Port on the PS3. You get 5.1 then right??

It could maybe be done via a USB addon?

Now we're talking more like $100 of course.

I kinda like my receiver though and I don't really want to spend $1000-$1300 on a new one just yet.
