Hi folks, newbie here. Got my PS3 about 2 weeks ago, loving it...
Except last night it kinda started freaking me out. I don't own any PS3 games yet---been using it for watching films, playing my PS2 games, and enjoying a few demos from the online PS store (NCAA Football '08, Resistance, NFL 2K8). Yesterday I downloaded a few more: GRAW, Dirt, and a couple more I can't recall. After installing GRAW and trying to play it, the weirdest thing happened. The "Playstation 3" logo flashed across the screen looking fine, but upon entering the gameplay menu the entire screen started flickering in this strange shade of yellow-green: it was like looking at the TV through night vision goggles. Actually I thought for a moment it might be by design---it's a Tom Clancy game, after all---but the same thing happens with ALL my demos now. PS2 games, DVD & Blu-Ray playback are all unaffected. Is there the possibility that installing one of the demos could have monkeyed with my settings somehow? TIA for any advice you have to offer. |

Could be something with the resolution set and your TV. What kind of TV do you have?

Check the Game settings in your main menu. You probably have something set wrong that the other options don't have.
It sounds like a setting is bad to me, that's all. Just go through all the settings and see if you can figure out what's wrong. Good Luck |

Couldn't seem to find an answer in the settings. Perplexed that the main menu's games settings have nothing to do with ps3 gaming, which is the only thing affected. TV is a Sanyo 32" CRT HDTV w/1080i resolution, connected via HDMI and with all display settings set (and reset) automatically and (it looks to me) correctly.
I haven't had it long enough to clutter up the hard drive, so what the heck: I've done a system restore and re-downloading Resistance. Hoping it works out! Thanks again fer yer gracious support in this matter. I don't really do forums 'cause I run into enough a*$holes in the real world, thank you very much; there's a reason I'm looking for help here rather than on some gaming board & that's 'cause this seems like a nice buncha folks---tru blu, you might say. |

Sounds like the TV is connected via HDMI and is receiving a 720p signal from the games which the TV can't interpret (GRAW, DiRT, and most of the other demos on the store run at 720p native). |

Problem solved, though still unsure what it was.
All of the demos were affected.; deleting & downloading them anew did not fix the problem. The TV manual gave no indication it could not handle 720p. Ultimately I went for the nuclear option, the system restore, then downloaded & ran a couple demos (including the GRAW 2 in which the problem first appeared): problem solved. It would have been more of a pain if I'd yet had time to load the hard drive with a lot of content. I let the HDMI automate display settings again after the restore; 720p is ticked & the GRAW demo runs fine, so that would not appear to have been the issue. Some ghost in the machine, I guess. During this process I took the time to re-position the unit so it can stand vertically and it seems to run with considerably less noise and heat. I want it to be happy and serve me well for some time. It's been a discomforting experience but it all seems to have worked out. I sincerely appreciate the help. |
