Default BUY-A-THON's

Yo. Guys. TIME OUT!

I'm not at all opposed to these BUY-A-THON days. Numerous threads popping up on this (sorry i just created another one ). For those that can afford to do it...please do so.

HOWEVER... what is going to REALLY make an impact is the **trend analysis** that Paramout, WB and Universal will be plotting over the coming days and months to determine their home video directions for 2008.

It makes a far bigger statement to spread your dollars out over time so the net compounding effect of continued blu-ray sales shows steady and healthy growth in the coming days and weeks.

The financial modeling people at the Studios are not stupid. Big spikes on a handful of days does not sell these companies on adopting Blu-ray.

My advice.... determine how much overall $$$ you can afford to spend on Blu-ray for the remainder of the year. Look at the pre-order list. Then make a plan to buy BD's at steady intervals (ie: one a week, etc...) and put it on your calendar.

PS: This will go a long way to ensuring the success of Blu-ray rather than joining a secret vampire society...IMHO.

The IDEA behind a buy-a-thon isn't to spend all you are going to buy in that day... you are suppose to keep buying the discs as you normally would, over time... but for the buy-a-thon you are suppose to buy an extra disc (at least one) in addition to what you normally would buy. So this is not suppose to make a HUGE impact, but it is suppose to make some sort of impact by adding even more that would not normally be purchased.
Also, this day was chosen because it is a major BD release day, lots of titles coming out so if they see lots of people buying new and old titles it shows that they may have purchased them because there are more titles out now.
If it is done right, then there will be NO slowing down in sales before and after the event, but on that day there should be more sales than usual. It might be a spike, but it might be a strong spike (not necessarily huge) that shows there are more supporters of the format out there than HD-DVD supporters.

I have noticed on sales graphics for the 2 formats that, when compared side by side, the Blu-ray graph is fairly stable with good sales, and few spikes, never dropping very low at all and rarely having huge spikes in sales either. Meanwhile, HD-DVD is sporadic at best, showing that the sales are unstable and fluctuating wildly. There are often huge drops and spikes and to me, that is evidence that the HD-DVD is purely unstable and not reliable. Blu seems to be stable and constant, while HD-DVD is not, and if I were to put money on one of them, it would be the balanced portfolio .

I laugh everytime someone starts some buy XYZ disks on such a day. The only thing this does is stop zealots from buying two weeks before and two weeks after the magic date.

You get a nice pop on that day, perhaps that week, but you lose a lot of sales before and after that.

Other than psychological boosts, this means little. The right thing to do is to simply buy movies only when you want to watch it, not to support some sales crusade.

I agree 100%. No 1 week worth of sales numbers is going to influence a decision in this "war". A nice consistent (upward) sales curve is better than one that is erratic as it shows stability in the format.

The only benefit to these "BUY-A-THONs" would be if they were scheduled against weeks where you believe HD-DVD will win in sales (IE Transformers).

I both agree and disagree.

I agree that people shouldnt worry about buy-a-thon dates and just buy a bluray title any time they choose, over any given period of time.

I also disagree, because these buy-a-thons also get people who were not planning on buying a movie in the first place, to buy a movie.

so, I guess I would have to say these buy-a-thons probably help more than they hurt. Those who already buy movies may end up picking up one extra...and those who had no plans to buy any movie, might just end up getting one, just to 'be a part of something'.

Good analysis, the trend thing is true. BD has demonstrated a very good trend record.

Buy-A-Thon's are for EXTRA discs. There are so many Awesome BD releases coming out in the next 4 months its going to be hard to keep track of all of them.

I agree. I enjoy coming to Blu-ray.com but in the overall scheme of things will the members here make much or any difference in the overall sales of Blu-ray disks? I plan on buying some disks and I sincerely hope Blu-ray prevails (I know it will) but I will be up to the Blu-ray sellers to give the masses a convincing product to buy.

I don't think buy-a-thons on random days do a lot to the overall numbers.

But, having a buy-a-thon on October 16 to battle Transformers on HD is a good idea. That week is probably the only week that HD could win vs. BD.

Can you imagine the excuses from the HD camp if even Transformers can't win a week for HD?

I was all gung ho for the buy a thon but I had the exact same thought one day of huge spending will not determine which format studios choose. What will the buy-a-thon really prove, that we can organize, so what. Animals that hunt in packs can organise some what. Buy Blu Rays when you want and spread it out.

Great minds think a like!

Do you really think if people are not plannning on buying a movie they will buy one because there is a buy-a-thon. I don't !

The purpose of a BUYATHON is to generate additional sales. Some people will delay buying movies for a BUY-A-THON. However, most of the members involved in the one scheduled for the 18th understand that we should buy movies as planned (on the date of the BUY-A-THON we will buy some additional titles). After the 18th our purchases will be as before. An additional purpose of the event is to create unity and excitment among the forum members. As the event gets near some members seem to be displeased with BUY-A-THONS. There is a simple solutions for those that dislike organized BUY-A-THONS. Do not participate, but please do not ruin the fun for the rest of us.

Sony should pay Disney/Buena Vista to bring out Sin City at the same time Transformers does.
