Default HD DVDs With Better PQ Than Their BD Counterpart

Someone suggested in another thread that I make a list that shows which HD DVDs actually have better transfers than their BD counterparts. I only know a few off hand so I will go ahead and post them. I am counting on the rest of you forum members to help me add titles to this list.

Apollo 13 - BD has DNR
Band of Brothers (JP) - U.S. BD has DNR
Basic Instinct - BD has DNR
Downfall - U.K. BD has DNR
Mummy, The - BD has DNR
Mummy Returns, The - BD has DNR
Thing, The - BD has DNR
U-571 - BD has DNR

Just stating the facts. I know that the titles I have listed so far have substantially better transfers on HD DVD.

That may be, but I seriously never suspected that "Apollo 13" and "Downfall" have DNR; they are still pretty grainy (in a good way).

I do understand "The Mummy" movies though; it's pretty distracting there.

The only reason I knew about Apollo 13 and Downfall was because Xylon posted some comparisons over at AVS ages ago.

This is blu-ray.com. HD-DVD is dead. It's one thing to have a thread discussing which movies are available on HD-DVD and not BD, but it's a different thing entirely having a thread dedicated to the perceived "superiority" of some HD-DVDs over their BD conterparts, particularly in the Blu-ray Movies forum. It's not for me to decide, but I imagine this thread will either be closed or moved to the Off-Topic forum.

That's the problem. It's not perceived. There are quite a few HD DVDs out there that have superior transfers when compared to their BD counterparts. There's nothing wrong with letting people know which titles those are.

There is nothing wrong with letting people know at all. However, I think the audience for this type of information especially on this site will be quite limited to say the least. This sounds like a topic that was going on during the format war. Not now. And if there is a "perceived" difference who is to say this "difference" will not be corrected with the inevitable double dips that are sure to come in the future.

Until those double dips occur I will maintain this list.

I always heard The Thing was much better on the HD-DVD version. They couldn't leave well enough alone when it came to the Blu version. I only own the blu version. (and the very first DVD release - It contains an isolated score track over the making of Doc.)

Yeah, good luck with that. Especially when your quoted sources are the screen shot scientists from AVS.

And that's a good source IMHO. Much better than some sources, that's for sure.

The Pans Labyrinth bluray AND HD-DVD had DNR for the US release.

The UK release of the bluray had NO DNR. I assume thats also true for the UK HD-DVD.

You need to fix that part.

I truly believe this site is the main reason for my blu-ray obsession. But the quesiton has come up before, and now has resurfaced so I have to ask: Why does everyone get so offended with the HD DVD subject on this website?

I know Blu-ray won the format war, and I think technologically that is great. I own about 100 blu-ray movies; but I also own over 50 HD DVD movies as well. I really don't get offended talking about one format over the other, or talking about VHS, beta, laser disc, or any other format. It seems that discussing 3D technology is alright, probably because blu-ray and 3D go hand-in-hand. But so many people on this sight seem to get morally offended and judgemental when it comes to the crazy cousin known as HD DVD! It's friggin' movies we are talking about, not starving children and the homeless in America!

According to two different sources the HD DVD and U.K. BD has no DNR while the U.S. has DNR. Can you confirm differently?

+1. Heaven forbid if the HD DVD has a better transfer than the BD.

Oh I'm not offended in the least. To me it just seems like we are talking about a format that has run its course. Back in the 70's there was much talk about how the reel to reel tape was better than the eight track tape. Then how much better better gold cassette tape was than the "other" brand. I think talk about HD-DVD will follow suit with talk about the reel to reel in a few years.

I owned both blu-ray and hd-dvd pretty much right from the beginning, I had almost 40 hd-dvd titles, which I sold not long after the tech was discontinued. The main deal breaker for me was that most hd-dvd's didn't have lossless audio and still used lossy tracks, some blu-rays did as well, but most blu's had or have better AQ than the same movie on hd-dvd.

Also the hard scratch resistant coating on blu's was another big reason I preferred blu-ray, because over half of my hd-dvd collection (mainly the titles from universal) had scratches on them when I purchased them, obviously caused during the manufacturing process. I buy a blu from time to time with a scratch on it which I always return to the retailer for an exchange, but the problem is almost non existent compared to when I was buying hd-dvd's. I take great care of my movies, but its still a good feature and benefit to have, especially considering I have put little surface scratches on my dvd's before by just cleaning them gently with a microfibre lint free cloth.

I had the Mummy, Mummy returns and Apollo 13 on hd-dvd, none of them had lossless audio (only lossy tracks), but they do on blu-ray. I would take lossless audio and a scratch resistant coating over any hd-dvd that has a slightly better transfer and PQ, any day of the week.

Great points by both sides, but dont you think arguing a dead format is kinda pointless? I mean I can say the VHS was better than DVD but its not gonna bring it back.

Lets focus our energy on the current technology and not the "could have been's"
