i hear it isn't as good as part I but I bought a copy anyhow... I think it will be good on its own.

I bought Vanishing Point and French Conn. II at BB and saved 10.00 instantly at the register.

I love French Connection II. It's by John Frankenheimer, who made lots of great films and has an eye for brutal action (Ronin, Reindeer Games, 52 Pick-Up). It's one of the best sequels I can think of.

I've never actually seen it but I heard it was really good for a sequel. I have it in my Netflix queue right now.

Its actually quite a good film. If you enjoyed the first film you should enjoy the sequel.

French Connection II is one of those extremely underrated films that you rarely hear about these days; like Speed 2, most folks don't even realize there was a second film.

I actually prefer FC II to the first film; the European setting is interesting, and it was interesting to see Popeye Doyle (Hackman) very much out of his comfort zone. The sequence when he unsuccessfully tried to communicate with the bartender in that one scene (Doyle only spoke English, and the bartender only spoke French) was quite amusing, and was more realistic than what we see in most Hollywood films, i.e. people speaking English fluently, even in non-English speaking countries...

I finally gave this a spin a few months ago. Thought it was a decent follow up. I didn't think it was as memorable as the first film and it lost much of that film's style and grit, but it's not bad. Kinda missed the Roy Scheider character.

It's a good sequel in that it's well-made and Hackman gives a very good performance. It's a bad sequel in that (spoilers for the first movie)
[Show spoiler]it's a sequel that takes a true story with a dark open ending where the bad guy escapes back to France, and allows the hero to fly over there and catch him.

Funny tidbit: When I interviewed Friedkin I knew about his love for Frankenheimer, so I asked him about this, and he said he refused to see it, and even wrote Frankenheimer an 8-page letter begging him not to make it.

I like this movie a lot other than the extremely boring because it's dragged out way too long
[Show spoiler]heroin withdrawal sequence
. I love the whole fish out of water element at the start of the film and the last 8 minutes or so that has little to no dialogue.

Agreed. Superb acting by Hackman in this film.

[Show spoiler]The withdrawal scenes in II (after Doyle is forced to become an addict by the criminals) are, IMHO, as good as Sinatra's acting in similar scenes from the classic Man with the Golden Arm...Quite harrowing...
