The above link mentions that the Wii will not be able to play DVD's. |

Wow, that sucks. How about backward compatibility in terms of GameCube games? Doesn't even have this?

It was supposed to, last I checked. Not for nuthin', but...who cares if these game consoles play DVDs, especially now? Nintendo knows that just about everyone that would ever buy a DVD player of some sort owns by now, so why have any unecessary costs on the machine that don't need to be there? That being said, I would have gladly paid an extra $50 on this thing for HD resolutions and Dolby Digital. They're only going to Dolby Pro Logic II again and nothing past 480p. Somehow the gimmicky controller makes this thing a "next generation" console despite the above two glaring oversights and, imo at least, needless omissions. |

Let me confirm, the Wii does play gamecube games, but you need a gamecube controller and a memory card at least with the cube version of the legend of zelda twilight princess. There is a flap on the right side of the console where the controllers and memory cards plug into.

i would prefer to have dvd playback simply if I go on vacation or something. Otherwise, youre right...who doesnt already own a dvd player..no big deal.
Im still annoyed that its $250 and only has one controller. They said that the wii has the same gpu as the Gamecube. All they did was bump up the RAM and the clock speed. They sell the GC for $100 now, im sure for no loss at all. Why does an overclocked GC need to be $150 more??? The controller cant be that expensive. |

![]() Yeah, it probably is. ![]() You make some good points though. Hell for $250 or so, we should have seen some Dolby Digital and HD resolutions put in there to finish it. In reality, I really don't believe an overclocked GC with a funky controller = $150 more, but I'd need to see it broken down for me. |

they are going to charge an additional $60 for the second controller.
Added accessories (and games) is usually how companies make money since they sell a console at a loss. Nintendo is making crazy profits on this system simply because they competition is asking for so much for their consoles. The competion is asking so much because their system is a true nex gen system. The biggest problem with the wii (excluding the name) is the fact that they will need to release another one way sooner then either Sony or MS. At some point people will get sick of playing Gamecube games that have no slow down. |

Or if they do, it's so negligible... Quote:
$2560-$60 controller= $190. A lot of us had hoped/thought the Wii woud have cost around $200. Imagine $199 for that thing. Psychologically, that number is unreal! That 1 instead of a 2? The fact of the matter is: It is an overclocked GC, and imo, THAT is not a $200 piece of hardware. Quote:
Here's where Nintendo frustrates me: It's the land of milk and honey with their handhelds. Great software all over the place, nonstop support, and yeah, they upgrade the handheld every year or two, but it's always backwards compatible. The consoles have been second distant fiddle for years for them and it shows. The GC was a nice system. It deserved more attention and support then it got. It has some really good games on it, but not enough. Nintendo thought they could bring out a title every 9 months and pepper in the dozeth Mario Party or Mario Sports title and have some afterthough third party support and all would be well...but it wasn't. Then they basically abandoned the Cube earlier this year. Abandoned it outright. I'm amazed they're still bringing Zelda out for it, quite frankly, especially since the Wii is backwards compatible anyways. Truth be told, I feel that both the original Xbox and the GC had plenty of untapped potential and life left to them and were both abandoned prematurely. Oh well... All done now. But what makes hesitate on the Wii is: Am I going to see GC 2? Tepid support, afterthought priority to the handhelds? Because if that's the case, then I may not bother. I'll just buy a DS lite since that's where it's really at for Nintendo and call it a day. |

I felt the same way until I got into PC gaming a few years back. I'll be playing games until I'm 100 years old. ![]() I use consoles to fill in any gaps that I can't get on the PC, which these days, isn't much. |

i can't get into the "PC Gaming" thing. I guess it's the whole buy a video card everytime a cool game come out thats really a turn off for me, plus the keyboard and mouse just scream work to me, a controller is just so much more psychologically comforting to use.

depends on what you prefer brian but you can get a very very nice keyboard and mouse combo that work way better than any controller because you can customize every little thing to suit your exact needs. I will definately be buying a Wii even though there may not be much 3rd party support simply because you know most of the games that nintendo will release will be very very good. Just look at the GC great games include Wind Waker, Mario Tennis, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros Melee, etc. While those games might not be your cup of tea they are very fun multiplayer games that are very well made and tested and IMO certainly blow away a lot of the trash that gets released for PS2 and XBOX.

That sucks.
No DVD playback sucks considering that this is a new console. This is the year 2006, NOT 1996!!! Nevertheless, I'm still buying it though although I wish that after a year, they reduce the price of the new controller. $60 = 3000 pesos for such a thing seems quite steep. |

Keep in mind that Nintendo's console is the cheapest one all of the three and if they included DVD playback, the cost would have gone up. Most people have a DVD player in their homes.

Yeah not that many people really use there consoles for a dvd player I mean seriously you can buy a half decent dvd player for like 50 or 60 bucks at best buy so if you really need a DVD player that badly then get that if not. Well then the Wii is going to be a great console and i'm predicting it will be probably the best party system of all 3 next gen consoles.
