Default PlayStation 3 and DVD playback

Afternoon everyone. Just had a small question for you all.

My PlayStation plays Blu-ray like there's no tomorrow - they look stunning. But my DVD's on the otherhand look different than they do if played on a normal DVD player. Some widescreen get formatted into a fullscreen aspect ratio and the whole thing looks... strange. Like it tried to upconvert it and it came out looking overly sharp. When I play these DVDs in my upconverting DVD player, they look beautiful. Anyone know how to get the PS3 to stop messing with the aspect ratio?

Thanks.

Go to : SETTINGS > VIDEO SETTINGS > BD/DVD UPSCALER - NORMAL

Also during playback, you can mess around by hitting TRIANGLE :
Go to AV SETTINGS> UPSCALE - (See which one looks good to you)

The PS3 upscaler does some weird things at times.

I had a downloaded good TS version of QoS that I converted into DVD and when my PS3 upscaler was on FULL, it gave it a weird look to it. I had to put it to normal so that weird look would go away.

It doesn't do anything wierd, rather it does exactly what you tell it. The "Full" setting tells your PS3 to stretch the video to fit your entire screen, regardless of its aspect ratio.

If you want your PS3 to upscale the video, but leave the aspect untouched, use the "normal" setting. "Full" does not mean more upscaling than "normal" as some might think.

"double scale" doubles the source's original resolution, while keeping the aspect ratio. It may or may not properly fit your screen with this setting. Its almost a pointless setting, but it does have its uses.
