Default decision: Pioneer or Sony

Hello all, I was thinking of possibly early adopting a Blu-ray player but not positive yet. If I did, I was going to decide between the Sony and Pioneer players. I know that the Pioneer is going to be $1500 out of the gate. I also did read that it was going to come with a 2 yr warranty. I know Pioneer is a good brand but would it be worth $500 more than the Sony? Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Im getting the sony. I've seen it in person (prototype) and it was nice. Plus with the delays i think they got something up their sleeve.

Pioneer is, in my mind, one of the top two companies in HT right now (the other being Denon). I never used a Sony player, but their receivers are crap. Take that for what you will.

I've had excellent experiences with all of Sony's Video related products. I think their Receivers are O.K. but no worse than many of the other lower end receivers out there. Their ES series can hang with alot of the other similarly priced receivers. I prefer Pioneer for Audio, and i'll take Sony for Video any day!

I never used Sony for video playback, but most of my camcorders, including my current HD one, were/are from Sony. So I really can't attest to their DVD capabilities. Pioneer, on the other hand, are among the best of the best.

Most of my gears are Pio. They have excellent track records for producing some of the best AV gears out there (mid-high end, not high-high end). I don't have any problem shelling out $500 more for a Pio BD player, the problem is...their first generation player may not have enough advanced features (HDMI 1.3, etc.).

I'd be very surprised if the Pioneer Elite player didn't have HDMI 1.3. Another thing to think about is the 2 year warranty. Figure that if you bought the Sony and got a 2 year warranty out on it, it'd be around $1200. So really, you're only spending $300 more for the top quality there is right now. And you'd know you had the best of the best. But I've heard rumors of a delay until November which would be bad.

A pity the Sony player couldn't be an ES model. That would mean a 5 year warranty out of the box, which would be VERY reassuring to many people.

Elite products only have 2 year warranties out of the box?...

I would get the pioneer. Its home networking and plays for sure ability make it a very interesting and cool device. The new pio tvs will also be plays for sure so thats interesting too. The pioneer will have a way better audio processor than the sony too i would imagine. Remember movies aren't just video they come alive with audio. The pio will be the player to beat.
