Default Can someone answer this? (re:PS3 and Blu sales)

I read a lot of HD-DVD supporters saying that PS3 owners don't buy many blu-ray movies. And also we know their are more HD-DVD standalone units sold than blu (excluding PS3). So if this is true. Then why are sales of blu so much higher?...More PS3 owners use it for a blu player than they want to admit. I am an example of that. I was waiting for the war to end. But, then got in on the Walmart buy a PS3 get ten free blu movies. I have had the unit for 2 weeks and haven't played one game on it. I just use it as a blu player.

i have more movies than games on mine. but i use it pretty equally for both. i have really no plans on buying a stand alone until blu wins. reason being is that i HEARD most have really long load times and for being so expensive, i don't want to buy them until they get that issue worked out. My PS3 is working perfectly for me now.

I own about 20 Blu-ray movies and have zero games for my PS3 aside from downloaded ones from the PSN.

I'd say many PS3 owners used SD TVs and see no benefit to Blu-ray (there are benefits, just not as many). But all that will change...

I am playing more games than I expected to, on the PS3 but I own 19 movies on Blu. With Chrismas that will be spiking soon. I watch more movies than I play games personally.

Same here had mine for 11 months, but I believe I read somewhere that only 40% of PS3 owners know that the PS3 is a Blu-ray Player. Out of the 40%, I forget what % of them that uses it as Blu-ray player but it was low. Which I thought was surprising, since I think it’s the best Blu-ray player currently on the market.

i use mine for both movies and games, but its easily the best bang for your buck when you add up all the functions that a ps3 can do against a stand alone player.

I use mine equally for both. I usually play ps3 for at least an hour or so each night (REALLY the best workout partner I have ever had!! ) lol! and watch blu-rays whenever possible.

My dad bought a ps3 Strictly for the blu-ray movie capabilities and all my friends who own one have at least 3 or 4 titles whether they have a hdtv or not because they KNOW they will upgrade soon.

the bottom line is that HDDVD fanboys want sooo badly to believe that ps3 owners don't make a dent in the high def market but they are completely f**king delusional and are grasping for ANYTHING that will make them look even the least bit ahead of the curve.

And as far as standalone sales figures go, It's really only true in the US. HD-DVD is virtually non existant in the rest of the world compared to Blu-Ray sales. Blu-ray is selling more and more in the states each month as the price goes down so that 'stand alone' number won't mean a thing within 6 months to a year here either. hell,, the only thing that statement equals up to now is = "look at all the money were losing while we practically give these things away"

Hello! I just wanna ask you this question: Can PS3 playback VC-1 encoded bluray discs such as the The Planet Earth BBC Series? Thanks a lot!

Sales are higher because even with the low percentage of PS3 owners buying BDs there's a lot a of PS3s out there to begin with. They buy them for games, they don't have a HDTV, or are simply not that interested in getting movies. That's why it's so hard to quantify the PS3 when it comes to player sales, as it's a multi-use device whose sole purpose is not to play BDs. You could attempt to extrapolate an "effective number of PS3 players" based on having the same attach ratio as HD DVD, only with a larger sales ratio, and it wouldn't be that bad. The problem though is that the attach rate still sucks, for both formats. HD DVD has sold around 2.5M discs so far I believe, with 750k players - that's only 3.3 discs per player! There's a lot of cup holders out there that at best is being used only with the free movies that came with it. Unfortunately the same can probably be said of Blu-ray, with the total sales hitting 4M discs.

the attach rate might be higher for HD DVD, but the numbers they use are skewed and not accurate. They do not include the PS3 when talking about Blu-ray players sold, but they do when talking about the attach rate of movies per player.
The fact is, there are around 2 million PS3s out there, and only 750k HD DVD players... So even if not all PS3 users use them for movies, a good number of them do and with the 400k stand alone Bd players out there, thats some 2.4 million or so units. The attache rate is a meaningless and pointless number and is just a ploy by the HD DVD camp to try to make Blu-ray look like it has bad sales and that HD DVD has better sales, when the fact is the industry does not look at attach rates to determine how well something sells, but at how many discs actually sell. And far more BD sell in USA, and even more in other countries, than HD DVDs.

PS3 plays ALL Bd discs. It is also going to be upgraded to support all the future profiles.

A couple of things...

-I find it hard to believe that someone who is willing to spend $400-700 on a system. Does NOT know the PS3 can also play blu-ray movies.

-And even if HD-Dvd's are correct and a small amount of people know they play blu. Can you imagine what will happen when they figure it out or hear about it?? Blue already has a 70-30 lead. Now add 2 million plus people who figure out they can play blu movies.

Simple because of all the BOGO's the BR has going on all the time. HD DVD has had what maybe a couple. With all the BOGO's it shows more sales for BR. Simple as that.

Every week BR is giving away titles which will show more sold. (which I dont mind). People (BR fans) tend to forget or ignore this fact. If you take away all the Bogo's BR has had this race would probably be dang near dead even.

I think alot of stuidios look at that as well.
