Default Do you think it will be worth ugrading to a 3DTV....

Say a person is ready to buy a new tv and they decide oh the 3DTV is comming out soon, so I will buy it. Lets say 3DTV last for a couple of months(yes I know it will last longer than that but anyway) would the 3DTV be worth buying if you are looking for a new tv anyway even if the 3D falls off the face of the earth?

Also the 3DTV would still be in the same price range as a non 3DTV you would be looking for. Worth it?

With the first generation of 3DTVs comming out very soon. What kind of problems could the first 3DTVs have, same problems as the first HDTVs meaning over heating(If the first HDTVs had that problem on the first models),etc?

Well IMO I don't think poeple should buy because you need special glasses for one and it's fairly new so you need to expect bugs, malfunctions and far from perfect tech. If there is a price difference I wouldn't touch it untill the compagnies gain a bit of experience with this new tech.

I say right now, NO and only because James Cameron says this:

"Regarding 3D in general, Cameron said: "We've demonstrated that the 3D market is an extremely lucrative market and this is not a fad." Admittedly, the arrival of 3D TVs will change the situation once again, but he expected them to take a while to catch on because "there isn't enough content."

Cameron expects people will buy 3D TVs because of future-proofing. "If they're going to buy a 55- or 65-inch monitor they want to make a decision that they're going to feel good about three or four years from now. But right now we've got a content gap."

That lack of 3D content for the home can't be filled by movies, because "we can't make them fast enough. So it's going to have be filled by live production or near-live production." He revealed that live 3D television is relatively cheap; however, any visual effects work done in 3D gets "a significant uptick in the cost of production."

It will definitely be worth upgrading, but not for a while. I for one, am waiting a generation or 2 or 3 until the technology gets better. Saw a demo last week at Sony Style and really didn't look very good at all. The glasses are too expensive at the moment also.

Buying anything during the first (let's see how it goes) generation is always a very bad idea, you know it'll be full of glitches and that just a year later, everything will be much improved and probably at a lower price. No way would I buy into 3D right away.

If you are happy with your equipment now, wait 3 to 5 years for the new technology to mature a little. Keep in mind that you will need to replace everything in the HDMI chain...to HDMI 1.4 (monitor, BD player. receiver/Pre).

So I am waiting for solid solutions before I decide to upgrade. But before I do anything, I want to make sure the quality is good (think Kuro blacks) and all the components play well together. I will be less likely to invest in the new technology If I am forced to stick with one CE company for the entire solution.

Just remember that in a couple of years it will be a non-issue because 3-D will come standard with everything, especially given HDMI 1.4's release this year.

For me, not really. Not too much of a fan of 3D. Even in theaters I don't really take the option to see it in 3D. So for now and for some time yet, I personaly won't be looking at making any upgrade to 3D.

i really doubt this. u can't tell me that companies are gonna flat out tell people "you have to wear these glasses if you want to watch tv."

i still think this will be an option available to consumers but will never be the standard.

Default Go for it!

I would definately get a 3D TV. I was able to demo the Samsung LED 3DTV this weekend and it was very impressive. Ontop of that the 2D picture was amazing. Right now it seems like there is a 200-300$ added cost for the 3D model. I know Samsung will be rolling out their 3D plasmas soon that have a 200$ markup for the 3D. If you can afford the extra 200-300, id go for it. The 2D picture was outstanding and you will be ready for 3D when more contect does come out. Also check out the HDGuru website, http://hdguru.com/panasonic-tc-p50vt...t-review/1391/ , he just reviewed the Panasonic 50" 3D Plasma and he notes the 3D effect is awesome and better than anything he has seen in 3D theatres, and thats saying a lot.
I don't know why everyone is saying hold off a few years, most people are not going to buy another TV in 2-3 yrs. If you buy a TV now why not just spend the extra 200-300 and be all set for 3D? Even if you dont want to get the blu ray and glasses right now, then fine, but you will be all set when you are ready. If you don't get a 3D one, you will have to buy another TV in 2-3 yrs if you like the 3D, and based on the HDGuru saying the 3D on that Panny is better than he has seen in the theatres, why would you not wanna get one?

Blu Benny, 3D will become standard and it will be available on every TV. 3D Tvs are backwards compatiable with all 2D stuff. I just demoed the Samsung LED 3DTV and it has an amazing 2D picture. You do not have to use the 3D and glasses, you can watch your 2D stuff with an amazing picture as well. Every TV will eventually have the abiility to view 3D, if you dont want to use it, you can watch your 2D stuff no problem. Right now its a 200-300$ markup for 3D, and since a 50" plasma runs around 1800, whats 200 more? Eventually ALL tvs will have the ability to run 3D with glasses, if you dont want the 3D effect, it can be turned off and you can enjoy outstanding 2d picture

By "standard" the poster refers to the notion that every TV will be a 3DTV. That doesn't mean that you will be forced to use the 3D feature, but it will be an unavoidable feature if purchasing a new TV. Thus, it will become the standard.

that i could accept, but not having the option for 2d would be a no-go for me.

You will always have the option of 2D. 3D blu-rays will have the 2D version as well, in fact you can play 3D blu rays in your current player and the 2D version will play.

i went to view the samsung 3D LED HDTVs yesterday. i gotta say the demo i watched wasn't impressive and if they want to sell some TVs...the tech better be better than that or get a better demo....that demo won't sell 3D.

i also viewed the sony 3DTV....at least there demo was a lil more impressive.

i was honestly hoping for more impressive visuals than I saw.
if they want to the public to buy into this....they need something 10x better because i don't think anyone would have bought based on the sammy demo. very very underwhelming experience. so much so....that i think i will hold off and see how it pans out.

umm i still have my 1st gen ps3 from 2006 and its been glitch free sooo not all things are better in 2nd gen ps3 took some things away like backward compatability and sd card reader and usp ports so 1st gen of 3dtv may be best may not

If you are in the market to get a new tv, i would say get a 3d one. they will do 2d just as well as the other tv's, so why not?

i have an old "pre 1080p" panasonic projection tv that did 1080i before anything was in hd so i am in the market for a new tv i have helped alot of friends buy new sets. i want a big tv that is good not uber godlike thats 7000 bucks so i am leaning towards that vizio 72 incher coming out its specs are good its 1st reviews from ces are good and all over the net vizio last year or two higher ens models have recieved good reviews from customers and websites. i cannot afford a projector , i want 3d led . waqnt 55inch or greater and not have to buy an add on transmitter for my tv to be 3d as stated in sony and a few other companies "3d ready" spiel. the samsungs are beautiful but are gonna be 7000 dollars for the good 55incher. so for 3499 i get 72 inches of good to great pic quality a 480 hz refresh rate contrast ratios that some websites who saw it in person say are great, wi fi , 480 zones of Smart Dimming. please if anyone has info fact based to help me make a better choice i would appreciate it. in fact any info on these tvs would be nice beside ces and press release stuff. thanks for letting me ramble on

btw my panny was 2900 when i bought it 10 years ago so thats still my close price point and no plasmas i live in colorado and my friends have had allll kinds of issues with everything from samsung to panny to sonys so i am avoiding
