Question Am I the only one who doesn't want a 3DTV?

I find 3D to be distracting. It takes away from what film was all about and makes it more into a gimmick. For example, instead of getting a scene directed to give us a sense of the location, character or plot...I get a scene directed so that a guy can come walking to "me" and I'm supposed to go "wow".

The ONLY positive I can see coming of this is that the price of HDTV's without 3D may drop, which would benefit me. Other than that I find it useless.

I certainly hope we don't start getting "3D only" releases in the future.

Film to me as I knew it is slowly starting to fade away...

Does anyone else share my thoughts about 3D?

Why not give it a try. We are living in the best of times. 3D, superior sound, HDTVs, Slim designs. What else could a home theater buff want. Enjoy it, don't put it down.

I use to watch 3D years ago with the old red and blue glasses. it was pretty bad. Yesterday I saw Avatar with the new RealD 3D. What a difference in advancement. If 3D technology continues to advance, possibly without glasses (who knows?), it could be come the standard and everyone will have it.

It's a nice concept, but if done correctly, it's expensive and the glasses are a complete turn-off. I, and most people my age, wear prescription glasses; the idea of cramming another pair on top of them, just doesn't fly.

This technology is being rushed, and the requirement for all new equipment (when I've just purchased high end Pioneer Kuro and Sony XBR televisions, and expensive Blu players) is just a complete non-starter.

This stuff simply isn't ready. It's gee-whiz, "pry some bucks out of the public" nonsense at this point.

I'll wait until this stuff is ready. My next TV will be a 100" unit; and the price should be low enough to warrant this new investment. There may also be some decent content out by then.

Maybe in five years or so.

I an not for it, but not really against it. I saw Monsters v. Alieans in 3D (The first 3D fikm I saw sence Jaws 3D) and was amazed. The movie was good too. As long as it does not become just a 3D experience and there is still a good story AND it looks as good as a top quality BD in terms of PQ then I guess I am ok with it.

i'm not a big fan of 3D especially at home, why would i want to sit at home and watch Tv with a pair of glasses on. Furthermore, I see the whole 3D IMAX thing as a marketing ploy to keep going to the theater.

I'm not really for it or against it. I'm curious to see how well it will catch on though. I kind of view it as the progression of movie and TV technology. Whether this particular 'gimmick' catches on or not, we can rest assured something will. After all, TVs used to be small, have tubes, curved screens, black and white pictures, and horrible resolutions. We've come a long way since then and it's not like we're going to stop now. If it does catch on, in 20 years time we'll all wonder how we ever lived without it.

Erman_94 you aint the only one who dont want a 3-D tv. I dont want one and dont need one. But no one is forcing 3-D tv's down our throats. You want one? Buy one if not then dont buy one its that simple. The problem I have with this whole idea is that you pretty much have to buy a whole new system to enjoy this 3-D thing and for me thats a no go.

I am not for it personaly but I am not against it. If people want to purchase you stuff in order to watch 3D at home, good for them.

As for me I am not interested, for me 3D is a gimmick. I know that many fans of 3D and shall we say cough cough Avatard will respond by saying, was color a gimmick? HD sound? Whatever, for me 3D is a gimmick use by Hollywood to turn ordinary movies with no stories and boring characters into shinny little things that people can drool over.

Even watching sports in 3D is not that interesting. Sit down and be very honest with yourself and wonder why they would sell sports in 3D. Most proffesional sports league now a day are full of billionaires who refuse to give 10% of efforts during playing their sports. When 30 years ago they were making 100% less money and were giving us 150% efforts on every plays. So what do we do to keep people glued to the TV? Offer 3D and charge for every game a premium for the 3D system.

I hope that those that want it can enjoy it as much as they want but I don't need it.

Excellent post and agree 100% especially with the "Avatard" comment. I liked that. I think its because of this movie that the big companies are going 3-D crazy.

I'm for 3-D as long as it's for the fun gimmicks like Coraline and other kids movies which are meant to be over the top visually entertaining movies, but if they decide to remaster Shindler's List or Saving Private Ryan to 3-D I'm out. I definitely WILL NOT be buying new equipment just for the 3-D. I will stick with just using the 5 cent glasses that came with the Coraline movie.

Most, but not all, people who don't like 3D are people who had a bad experience with one of the first 3D movies (which were bad) and haven't yet seen Avatar in 3D. I think that almost all theatrical 3D releases use 3D as a gimmick as the OP stated; but to anyone who has seen Avatar in 3D, it should be apparent where 3D technology is headed; and it's amazing!!! Avatar in 3D was the most mind blowing experience I have ever had and because of Avatar I will be buying a 3DTV!

I saw Avatar in a IMAX 3-D theater and it is the best 3-D movie I have seen so far. The 3-D effect made the movie much more enjoyable.

I don't wish to turn this into another Avatar thread (we got enough of them going on this site already) but I am still trying very hard to see exactly what was so special and amazing about the 3D in that movie. I seen it twice and really I did not find it ground breaking. In fact at one point I tought my 3D glasses had fallen off cause it look like I was watching a ordinary movie.

Did you see any 3-D effect at all? Maybe the theater was running a 2-D version or did not have the projector properly set up for 3-D. If it is true 3-D the credits and screen are blurry without the glasses.

I saw it in two different theaters, once in French with my friend and then in another theater in English with my brother. Both time it was the same and I mean it's truly 2 different theaters in 2 different part of town. I truly wasn't that amaze by the 3D, just a couple of scenes that sort of stand out. Everything else was very ordinary in my eyes

I have a 73" Mitsubishi rear projector that's 3-D ready. Trouble is, I get huge headaches from watching any type of 3-D. I'll probably never use it!

I have seen Avatar in 3-D and in 2-D, but I still don't like it, especially not at home. Maybe in the theater once in a while, but that's it. All the movies that are in 3-D at the moment are either CG animated features, or very heavy on visual effects. It's the only type of movie that works in 3-D, although I'm not even going to watch CG animated movies in 3-D anymore, because it makes them look fake to me.
If Star Wars will be released in theaters in 3-D, I will definitely go see it, but preferably in 2D, and then many, many, many times.
