Hand drawn animation always looks amazing on Blu-ray on the basis that it looks awful on DVD (compression artifacts ruin the colors, lines are fuzzy or pixelated, distant details are invisible to the eye).

This movie is amazing, why don't you have it yet.

My only complaint is the black border around the picture. Sony did it so people with overscan would see the full picture. Too bad they used the same transfer for Blu-ray. Hi-Def does not need to cater to overscanning TVs.

Just seeing the name of the movie instantly got the main song stuck in my head. Now it'll be there for a week.

Stunning disc, although I personally think that Tekkonkinkreet beats it by a whisker.

thx for that..i recently bought paprika & was stumped to see a black border, since it was a 1.85 aspect ratio.

sony should have been smart enough to crop the overscan for the blu release.

the soft look was the directors original intention. and it looks gorgeous, give the film a surface like quality, which is not as evident on dvd.

I saw the DC premiere of this with the director present. The audience laughed when the movie posters for all of Satoshi Kon's other films were shown at the end. My personal favorite of his films is Perfect Blue; I was tempted to get the Japanese import Blu-ray, but people blasted the quality. Paprika, on the other hand, looks quite good on BD. I still love the opening credits.

An interesting fact that might slightly change one's perceptions of the film: In Japan, "paprika" (or "papurika") actually refers to bell peppers. I believe this is also common in parts of Europe, where the term likely originated.

paprika is a very common spice around the world.

it just happens that the main characters alter ego is named paprika.

Yes, but in Japan (where the film originally came from) the term almost always refers to the fruit from which the spice comes.
