Blu-ray Knight

![]() ![]() Haven't seen any thread on this film, so I figured, having read (almost all, I am about a 1/3rd in the last one) the books that I might as well. More or less a Hary Potter wannabe, the 5 book series tells us about the existence of Greek Mythology in modern times, the struggle of a pair of young demi gods to be accepted by both their mortal relations and immortal parent figures as well as the journey reserved to Heroes, and the Rise of the evil Titan Kronos. Oh, of course there is a terrible prophecy that will only be revealed in the last book, but it does include a reference to the Hero and "the end our age". Very interesting series I think, full of action pieces (much more so than HP, it is also far less into character development -and the books are indeed much shorter-) and a pretty clever take on Greek Mythology in modern times. The writing is consistantly more kid- oriented than Potter (or rather it's like the first book aim more or less at the same audience age the first Potter book did, but the following books did not grow up with the audience, wherehas the HP books grew darker and deeper). The movie seems to have a -ton- of good SFX (and the 5 Percy Jackson books have some pretty amazing creatures and visual pieces, it only gets better after TLT), the first two Harry Potter movies director (Chris Columbus) and a decent cast (aside from the mostly unknown trio of young actors): Pierce Brosnan Sean Bean Steve Coogan Uma Thurman One thing kinda annoyed me: One of the trailers blew one of the big reveals of the first book [Show spoiler] Next HP, or next Golden Compass? This week end will tell I guess. Currently sitting at 54% (rotten) at Rotten Tomatoes, not too bad for this kind of movie I guess (althought director Chris Columbus scored much better -78 and 82%- on his first two Harry Potter films). I never read the books but the movie looks pretty cool. I don't think it will last past movie 2 though. Seems that if it's not Harry Potter or Twilight and over 5 books it won't all be adapted I mean look at Narnia that's not looking to good and the Golden Compass didn't last even Eragon didn't make it. But hopefully I'm wrong.

Harry Potter had the "plucky orphan" aspect that made us see the series as a Fairytale, and we could accept all the whimsical suspensions of disbelief--
Percy Jackson and his friends are all "hi-powered teens", and while Warner is certainly pushing Chris Columbus and "This is our next one to replace the old one!" in our face, it still....well...kind of looks like "Jumpers". ![]() Not that the book series shouldn't be filmed at least once, but Warner is making it run marathons in some awfully big shoes it may have only vaguely been trying to fill in the first place. (And no, nobody's waiting to leap on it and beat it to death like we were with Golden Compass--I've only read partway into the PJ books, but it didn't feel that obnoxious and despicable... ![]() |

I think this looks entertaining and could be a successful series. It doesn't seem to be off to a good start however with the studio dumping it into a february release. |

The books are all but a self admitted HP knock off (from the trio composed of a main Hero "not so bright but powerful", the "brainy and pretty" girl, and the "clumsy but likeable" pal, to the yearly visit to "Hogwarth" .. oops, I meant "Camp Half-Blood"), so it's fairly logical that the movies would be seen as such.
Then again, PJ&TLT is also seen as one of the "better" ripoffs ![]() Aside from that, I can assure you that the action scenes in most of the books would put most of HP's to shame (but that's not why people like HP anyway). Otherwise, it's not Warner that's releasing the movie, but Fox (which is weird, because the books are published by none other than ... Disney). Last edited by Elandyll; 02-12-2010 at 06:35 PM. |

I thought it was because of the religious 'controversy'?
