Default The potential HD DVD downfall

I used to be format neutral but after getting my PS3 I decided it was a much better machine than the xbox hd drive, So I have decided to sell my HD DVD collection on Amazon, this is where the problems have started, although Toshiba said that they gave HD DVD its name to be consumer friendly and to avoid confusion among people who don't know about hd I think they have really shot themselves in the foot, I have sold a few hd dvds on amazon now and have had numerous people email me saying "this dvd you sent me doesn't work in my dvd player!" I reply saying that its a HD DVD not a regular dvd, now this has caused so much confusion and lost me money from having to get items returned even though they are clearly listed as HD DVD. The regular joes just think that these are normal dvds and they will work on any dvd player but will look better, At least Sony changed the name completely so to avoid confusion. Go blu ray!!!!

My setup isn't quite there yet, but I can sure see how it can be someday. I'm re-watching movies more and I keep thinking when I'm either in the theater or just watching a movie on tv "man I can't wait to watch that on Blu-ray!"

I was watching The 13th Warrior the other day on High def and I thought it looked terrible...just like SD. It's not my favorite movie or anything, but I'd love to watch it again in BD just to see what they do.

I must admit not every movie looks good in high def but thats generally down to the studio doing a crap job of remastering, I watched black hawk down yesterday and it looked and sounded like a brand new film and give it that extra depth I hadn't previously seen on dvd

welcome. I might be quick to make decision to blu-ray (with the risk of being disappointed later), never been neutral, but I am happy with BD position against hd dvd.
you made the right choice

its like people are blind or something they see the words saying dvd but the full wording is hd-dvd so people think that hd-dvd movies can work on a regular dvd player and plus on amazon.com it says this movie can only be played on a hd-dvd player people just dont read the important stuff and plus the Playstation 3 is one of the best gaming machines by far there is so much you can do on it to be honest when i first heard of the price being $600 when it came out i thought that was kind of a cheap price for a gaming machine that has internet, free online gaming, playing blu-ray movies in beautiful picture and sound thats usually 99% better then hd-dvd movies plus the folding@home program where you support chemical research just by clicking on it and its not even a charity, plus so many other things

I agree I think blu ray would have one some time ago but sonys marketing is terrible I haven't seen one ad on tv for a PS3 here in the UK, they really need to plug this machine especially the fact that it can do lots of things and even be a freeview box

Are you sure they didn't return them because they didn't work on their HD DVD players? A lot of them don't work, you know.

Kidding aside, I believe this is exactly the reason why HD DVD studios are sticking to combo discs for most new releases, despite the widespread reports of massive failures. They can't afford to handle returns from DVD-only buyers.

Don't you wish they were combos? Oops, if they were, people might still complain they don't work...unless you gave them boiling instructions.

Many casual consumers are so confused by hd in general that this doesn't surprise me.

I've heard stories of high rates of return at stores for this same reason, people buying hd-dvds thinking it's just like a Superbit version or something. Part of it is the marketing for dvd players that "upconvert/upsample to hd" which has not only confused people's understanding of hd itself but also made many owners of said players think they can play "hd dvd".

Anyway, my wife thought hd-dvd was a better name because it was recognizable and if you have a brain and any clue you can figure out what it means -- but therin lies the problem -- most people don't have a brain+clue.
