Default Downfall

Anyone seen this? Its a film that portrays the last 12 days of Hitler being a live, and the actor who plays Hitler is supposed to give one hell of a performance.

Hi
Yes i own it on SDVD, just waiting to see what the reviews are like for the blu ray before i pick it up. The film is truely stunning, filled with top rate performances and direction. Cant remember the directors name but he also directed das experiment, which was also a great piece of cinema.

Cant reccomend it enough, many were put off by the subtitles, but as they have never bothered me (and lets face it, some world cinema is simply the best cinema out there) i can only say buy it, you wont be dissappointed.

Ok wow thanks a lot! yeah I have no problem with subtitles, it seems that foreign films are doing better than Hollywood!

I've seen it. Excellent look at the fall of Germany from the point of view of those stuck in the bunker. It's a bit of a mix between a tragic biopic and a war film. The secretary is the main character, but make no mistake about this film is about Hitler. The main character is merely there for Ganz to play his hitler off of, so that the depths of his psychosis could be examined. Best portrayal of a monorchic man I've ever seen.

If you find that you like Bruno Ganz (Hitler), you should check out Wings of Desire, the excellent German original adapted into City of Angels.

This was a very good movie. Definitely worth checking out.

Looking at your join date it was a little before your time, but have you seen the HD format war "version"?

Not an HD version just using it to tell the story of the "downfall" of HD DVD.

I actually just watched it today as I got it from Netflix. It's pretty good, but I was kind of disappointed there wasn't more of Hitler in it.

Yes, very good. 6 thumbs up. I recommended it to a few people in several threads, over the last few weeks.

If it's not my favorite war-related movie, it's certainly in my top 2.

I borrowed an imported DVD copy from UNC's library, so I had to mess around with my laptop's DVD player to get it to work. I figured I'd test it out and watch the first few seconds, to see if it would play, but planned on watching the movie sometime later in the week. I ended up watching the entire movie that afternoon, ignoring all the work I had to do. Within the next few days, I sought out/purchased a Region 1 copy on DVD.

Just got done with it and I loved it, a very different perspective from everything you see. Ganz was amazing as Hitler and though he had brief screen time his performance was so great that I would say its one of the best performances I have seen.

Great movie, hope it comes to blu...if not I will be getting the dvd.

Der Untergang (Downfall) is one of Germany's finest.
Seems like we are finally coming to terms with our past, without being "embarrassed" to talk about it. This kind of history lesson has been a long time taboo and just in recent years has become more acceptable.

If you get a change also check out "Sophie Scholl: Final Days" and the new adaptation about the RAF "Baader Meinhof Complex".

Some other great movies from recent years also include-

23 (It's about a group of the first computer hackers that get involved in espionage and one's fascination with the Illuminati)
Die Welle (A teacher's experiment to demonstrate that a dictatorship is still possible in today's life gets out of control) - I bought the region free Blu-ray not too long ago, unfortunately no English subs.

And of course "The Life of Others", which has already been released on Blu-ray.

If you want more info about any of these movies or similar ones let me know.

Downfall is great and I also would recommend Sophie Scholl : The Final Days in fact I loved it so much that I imported it from The UK.
