What I have done is cleaned several BDs with a paper towel. This would leave hairline scratches on any CD or DVD; this didn't happen on the BD, and while cleaning it, the BD feels much "harder" and more "slippery".
Hard to describe, but I would definitely say that the hardcoat works. |

thats great news that they'll be more scratch resist especially since its going to be very hard to back them up in any way, so if they get scratched your out of luck.

The steel wool test is bogus, I've performed my own durability test with some copper shielding, the same kind you find in coax, while the disc did get noticeably scratched, the same test performed on a red laser dvd left the disc in a preverbial ditch along the side of the road, the thing was mangled. Blu-ray discs do have a stronger coating but they are by no means impervious to wear and tear(or scratches), bottom line, take care of your discs!!!!!!!

most discs don't have the next generation coating on the discs so it'll be a little bit of time until you can really try the steel wool test.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, I used both TDK BD-r and a Red Laser DVD to perform the test, I should have been more clear about that, I'll perform another round of testing shortly when I performed it previously the amount of variability involved with the drives, software and media was too high to really be very conclusive. Visually, the BD-r was noticeably more resistant to the copper shielding than the Red Laser DVD. |
